Just been strippong off a few parts to photo the fuel pump and to liberally coat those bits you can't normally get at with ACF-50, ready for the winter salt. After stripping off the air intake trumpet I noticed the air filter is looking a bit mankey, certainly very dark in places.

The bike has just returned from a 12,000 mile service and I was surprised that on the final bill the only bits I had to pay for were oil, oil filter and a drainplug washer - plus labour, natch'.

I would have thought the air filter would be about ready for change by now? Two thoughts:
1) At what mileage do BMW recommend the filter be chaanged as a matter f course
2) Anyone used a K&N filter, and are there any performance benefits form switching to K&N. Anything better than K&N ?

The air filter should be replaced at the 12000 mile service.
or earlier if it's dirty and clogged (like it would be if you've been riding in dusty conditions).

Yeah 12,000 road miles tops, I reckoned 10,000 was enough for 1100 & 1150's insofar as the bike seemed smoother after a new filter was fitted, need to change much more frequently if you ride off road in dusty conditions . Not tried K&N's on BM's but have on other bikes. They do breath easier at full throttle but not convinced they actually do filter as well as paper filters after they have been washed a few times - in spite of the claims

So, looks like during the srevcoe my air filter was not replaced as it should have been.
Before I raise this with the dealer Iwant to check all other items that should have been done, does anyone have the recommended actions for as 12,000 mile servoce ? The BMW site has nwo removed this for "technical reasons". If they missed the opportunity to sell me a replacement air filter what else did they do not do ?

Maybe they just forgot to put it on the bill ... I would have thought that if they were trying to pull a fast one they would have charged you but not changed it...
