How long is a "prolonged period of time"?

I intend fitting a set of "pigtail" leads to the battery to allow use of my trusty Optimate through some of the colder parts of the Winter months. The owner's manual clearly states that if the battery is disconnected for a "prolonged period of time" the stored date in the OBC will need to be reset to keep the Service Indicator happy. But just how long is a "prolonged period of time"? My F800 had exactly the same wording in the manual, and (as I discovered on two separate occasions) it actually meant "anything over about 5 seconds".

So, how long can I expect to be able to leave the battery disconnected while I fit the pigtails if I want to keep the Service Indicator happy?

Or then again, maybe I'll just wait until the next service and fit the 'tails just before I take it in

I have no idea, but it is not likely to be within the few minutes that you may possibly have the battery disconnected for.

Go for it......you know when your next service is due I presume, so what's the absolute worst that can happen? the chip loses the date and the next time you go in to have it serviced by remembering it, the old fashioned way, they will reset it then....and life goes on.

undo the batt terminals one at a time,while removing the bolt keep the lead pressed to the batt with a screwdriver,put pigtail through bolt and screw back down.repete on other terminal.

I've got a set of little croc clips with connecting wires.. I just clipped one onto the battery terminal and one onto the battery lead.. with the ignition off no need to worry about taking the connection off

Good suggestion - but seems to require another pair of hands (or at least, another hand) to carry it through?
