How long to get used to Indicator switches?

Self abuse is the answer!

First, use your right hand, then, use your left hand.

Repeat until you are ambidextrous, or until your exhausted!!

Caution: it might not help your indicating but at least you'll be more relaxed about it :D:D:D

Got on GSA last year and yep its awkward - don't know if its just me but found getting my thumb to the cancel button was the only problem, felt like some kinda contortion!

A year later - its just 2nd nature, I never hit the horn (thought I would), however when I want the horn would i be confident to find it and hit it whilst something 'involving" was happening - I think not.

Anyone who thinks its dangerous/difficult should make use of the bikes centre stand and their garage! i.e. sit on your bike and just keep doing it until it feels normal! wa hey!!!

Hedges ain't a problem.

Done 50k on this 1200GS, 25k on each of my R100GSs and 25k on my 650GS.

The indicator switches are wank.

I also drive cars and commercials - nothing comes close to the bloody minded stupidity of the 3 switch indicator system.

:rob
This is getting like which oil to use.

Rice Burning Indi no

Have been advised that the new 2011 GS's will have cosmetic colour changes AND the indicator switch will now be consolidated on the left hand side - as per all the other bikes.......

FFS - after 8 "other" bikes - I've really mastered the left & right switch and actually now prefer it in some way.

Why the hell don't they leave something when it works..... surely if it works - don't fix it? :blast

At least if i buy a 3yr old adventure in 2 years it will still have proper indicators, i would hate to have Jap indicators, took me a few weeks and bingo it was the future some mupets have moaned too much!!!

whats not to like!!! and if you mess up they self cancel and that is a life/leg saver, my old rd250 and 350lc used to self cancel but modern jap bikes do not suspect this is cost cutting or maybe they just like you to have rta's

buy another bike all hope is lost ! you should also consider what happenes when the road surface changes ! and the weather ! and your mood ! and your age !

I remember when I picked up my R1100s from Coopers BMW in Reading 7 years ago, looking forward to my 200 mile ride home. As I was setting off, the sales guy said that he didn't think I would get very far without hitting the horn instead of the right indicator as it everyone did it. How pleased I was that I managed to get all the way home without doing it once...................right up to when I indicated right to turn into the end of my road........DOH!

never got used to em in 5 years, clumsy, large and awkward to use,
got a signal minder ,which helped greatly, but tbh im glad to be back on the jap switchgear now,

I too have been used to the jap signals for 5 years. Although I was a little thrown on the test ride of the GS, I got used to it eventually after about 30mins. I would say the only problem I faced was working out how to cancel the indicators! I was pressing it for a few seconds before realising you have to flick it upwards. :blast

The trick I found to get around the individual turn signals is a few seconds before planning to use the indicator, is move your thumb downwards and to the right from it's usual resting position. Then it's just a matter of finding the button to press. :)

The jap bike button is easy to use, however the issue I found with that is because the horn button was unnaturally low, I'd end up angrily cancelling my indicators instead of using the horn! Oops.

If you cannot do different things with each hand and foot, why are you risking yourself on a bike? Or in a car for that matter?

I work on the basis that on THIS machine the button to do THAT is THERE, and when I can't cope, it's back to the push bike, or maybe the wheel chair.

Now, follow this very carefully - roll off the throttle, while braking gently, switching on the heated grips and indicate right... OR try a hill start using the righthand brake lever.

What do you mean, you sounded the HORN? (Which I can never find in the car either!) And I have to admit that on occasion, in a fit of pique, like Stockport Claret, I have angrily sounded my windscreen washers (wish I'd said that).

Leave the indicator 'paddles' alone please Mr. BMW.

Much easier to operate than the fiddly little 'nipple' on my RVF.

Would prefer indicators which don't self cancel after about 250 yards though as when giving an early signal they turn themselves off just before I want them to ( eg Motorway / dual carriageway exits if you indicate at the III marker post ).
You can switch them back on but it just looks naff :(

Presumably the dealer could make some software adjustment ?

Never mind indicators, i have missed the horn twice now:mad:, the second time when a DHL van was reversing back towards me in traffic, had to look down in the end to find it!!!! (yes he stopped intime :bow )
