How long to ride through Spain

I'm off to the Costa del Sol, YIPPEE!!! Anyone got any decent routes from Santander to Marbella. It would be great if you could include ride times as I'm on a reasonably tight deadline going, and will be cruising back, at a much slower pace, over the top through France. If not, how long should I allow for the journey going? 3 days?? (Riding a 1200)

1 day easily if you wanted to, or two at a sensible pace.

It's 670 miles- we did it over two days at 43 MPH in the landy but it's a dead easy route (basically get on the E5 that runs North to south and go right to granada , then turn right ;) )

Did it in a day in the freelander

720 miles from Bayonne to Marbella, about 9 hours it took, avg. 88mph

If you want the fast but boring route get yourself to the E5/AP1
the N232 looks interesting and brings you out to the South West of Vitoria Gasteiz, else pick up the A8 to Burgos, then the E5 and just gun it from there, as you hit Madrid you need to navigate the motorways around it and head for the E5/A1 which was formerly the NIV (and may still be signposted thus).

Blitz down the NIV, there is a lovely section of pure straight road, lined with bushes, goes straight for miles but has roller coaster style undulations in it, followed by some loooong tunnels, a fantastic (for a motorway) mountain section with 50kph hairpins and lots of Curva Peligrosa signs, and they bloody well mean it, be warned! there is a tightly knitted section of 4 bends (with a nice viewpoint/layby), but these bends tighten quite sharply, enjoy :D

Keep following the sign for Jaen and drop off the NIV (E5) onto the E902 heading for Jaen, pass Jaen and follow the signs for Granada, there are some more mountain 'twisties' but watch out for the loons, some idiots really drive too quickly down there and mess up their lines especially on the downhill off-camber bends and are in both lanes at once!

Just before you reach Granada head west onto the A92 for Antequera and Malaga. Follow the signs to Malaga by picking up the A359 then the A45 to Malaga.

Pick up the A7/E15 to Estepona, you will pass the new enormous Leroy Merlin and the Airport, and stay on the A7/E15 (becomes AP7) to Marbella.

Should be good for 600 odd miles.

The 12 will do 130mph, so if you can hold in excess of 100mph on the straight bits you will make good progress but expect to only get 160 miles from a tankful.
Petrol stations on the NIV are a bit thin on the ground, so fill up in Madrid, just to be on the safe side.

It depends how much of an iron arse you are to do the whole hog in one go, the GS is good for the distance, its a personal thing, but drink shed loads of water!

If you do stop, there is a fabulous Parador in Chinchon (about 15 miles SE of Madrid), not cheap, but a great room, great facilities, quaint little town, wonderful views, a few dust tracks if you fancy and a very filling breakfast, with benefit of some stunning biking roads that lead to it (M311) and from it (M322) to rejoin the NIV.

Otherwise Toledo is further to the South West of Madrid but steeped in history and built on a hill side! The parador there is equally amazing, but again not cheap.

Either are great bases to break the riding into 2 days

Thanks Russ, thats a great response and will take it all on board. Looks like fun / fear and hopefully satisfaction once completed. Still think I'll give it a couple of days minimum as my arse has a nasty tendancy to freeze up on me. Mucho apreciacion!

One day should be easily achieved on this road - it's one of the few roads that I know where you can actually cover 100 miles of ground in an hour (if you're cruising at 100 mph).

:moped:

If you decide to split the journey into 2 days, I'd recommend that you pack your best bib and tucker and stay at the Almagro Parador - about 50 miles south of Toledo.

I must admit i'm jealous, driving it is good fun especially when you are thrashing a fully laden diesel freelander to within an inch of its life, but biking it would be even more adventurous...maybe one day.

Don't know when you are planning on going, but the 'plains' (i.e. South of Madrid to Jaen) can get VERY HOT in the summer daytimes (40 degrees in the shade), so if you stop, you will instantly sweat!

I think a two-dayer is a more sensible option, you can enjoy the second part of the journey after a good sleep and good food.

I'm going to add Greg's parador to my list of paradors to visit

It's on my list too! I've been there (in 40+ degree heat) but not stayed there.

I don't know why you would go that far east. I'd start on the N232 then fork right (south) on the N623 which takes you directly to Burgos.

But why not take a couple of hours detour through the Picos de Europa?? From Santander, head west along the coast, then south through the Picos on the N621. When you get to Boca de Huergano, head south east to Palencia.

I bow to your superior knowledge :)

I have only ever driven to Spain via france, and 'blitzing the twisties' in a fully ladden diesel freelander, although as a prospect highly amusing, wouldn't gain me any points with SWMBO.

Jai, if you are spliting it into 2 days, and the weather is decent, Tim's route will be more entertaining and may only cost you a few hours more in travelling time, but is very likely well worth it.

That route is certainly on my list of things to do now

I'm living in the center of Spain, so you can ask me some routes.
I think you MUST visit Toledo, an incredible medieval city.
Avila is also great. There are a lot of curves there.

In general avoid La Mancha (except Toledo) and Madrid. They are very hot, it is almost desert, and Madrid have a lot of car traffic.

Andalucia is simple fantastic. It is a mix of semi-desert and nice green Mountains. The people there is very nice. But avoid going there in summer... much people here sleep after lunch (what we call "siesta") because it is imposible to support such calor (hot). Spring is nice. Winter is a little cold (about 0 to 15ºC), but in summer you can expect temperatures of 45ºC in Sevilla... you've been warned.

The coast is very nice. Temperatures are about 35ºC in summer, and 5 to 15ºC in winter.

You can ask me whatever you want. :)

I am moving to the Algarve in July, and after I have shipped out the family and furniture, I am coming back to collect my GS to take it over there, still in a quandry though whether to go straight to Santander or to tackle France as well, any advice appreciated!

still in a quandry though whether to go straight to Santander or to tackle France as well,

Personally I'd do France, taking it easy.

Ferries can be soul destroying- sure, they're easy, but hours spent sitting amidst fruit machines and squabbling kids, plastic overpriced food and nylon carpets or a long ride heading downhill all the way across France....no competition for me ;)

Avoid the Peage, take your time and make it an event....it'll become part of the experience of the big move and be a far more positive period than just sitting or sleeping on a bloody ferry :D

Good luck with the move :thumb

If you have at bit of time take your self to the Marbella Gun & country club, just 15 mins from Marbella on the C-337 towards Monda.Stunning scenery, food and you can try your hand at clay shooting, don`t forget to sign the visitors book.
Open tuesday to sunday 10am to late
MD:)

I see a lot of people here like Spain. In summer the coasts are yours!! More english & deutch people than spanish ourselves. Incredible.

Welcome to the Joint :) and you just gave me two good reasons to avoid the coasts in summer :D

Take Fanum's advice, make it an event. The ferries from UK to Spain are the pits. What would you prefer to be doing riding your bike down through France :D or being bored to death on a ferry?
