How much !!!!! Cardiac arrest-------------.--.------------------

Its easy really,

I got 110k on mine and nearly on 3rd set of discs.

If you want longevity and not so much feel or bite get bmw pads they are expensive but last for ever,
more feel and bite go for ferodos from steptoe etc. i use these with his discs and they are great particularly when hot.

I use a lot of rear brake dragging it in corners etc aftermarket can go in as little as 2-3k so i go with the bmw (adventure spec sintered) which are 3 times as much but get 3 times the wear rate.:thumby:

Cheers for the info interesting as I tend to ride similar to that !

I use Ferodo's pads and discs from Steptoe and they are excellent in all conditions.

I don't know how using another make of pads will affect your warranty.

I would guess been a cynical bugger any excuse BMW could use to avoid a claim not using genuine parts would be one of them! Thanks for the input

I replaced the OEM's on my GSA at 24K - they were only half worn. I replaced them because I had always felt they were a bit lacking, certainly compared to my K1100 which is sporting EBC double H sintered and those brakes are phenomenal. I opted to try a set of the Ferodo platinum pads from Steptoe on the Hexhead and they're fine, not quite as much bite to them as the EBC but certainly good enough for the task - just need a bit more lever pressure. These are wearing out at about twice the rate than the OEM's did but I'm not looking for longevity over braking power. At 36K on them my discs are just about getting to the BMW wear limit so I'm probably OK for another 6K and then I will try the EBC's out.

It certainly seems like the ferdo padshave the upper hand thanks for your input!

Steptoe has a big trade box of Ferodo pads, not some eBay knock offs, as he gets through plenty during the year. They are very good, and way cheaper than OEM parts.

Keep your OEM pads with the BMW logo embossed into them, they can be refitted if presenting for warranty claims.

Got some of Steptoe's specials in the front of mine now, stops very nicely indeed. :thumb2

I have a full set of ebc hh sintered for tc bike, swapped to wc before fitting, pm if interested

Thanks for the offer that's good of you but I've opted for the ferdo pads awaiting delivery all the best jon

Since this thread has morphed into "how many miles from a set of pads" I'll add my two penn'orth. Original pads changed at 14000 miles for a set of BMW pads for about the same price as the OP but the bike was in for a service and I took the easy way out. The rears lasted about 13000 miles.

I don't think I use my brakes hard and 14000 is not a lot of miles for a set, maybe they are a soft compound? Any way, the next set will be EBC as I've always had good experience of these, particularly the HH pads.

My last bike was a Yamaha Diversion 900 with standard discs but blue spot front brakes from an R6 and Goldfren HH pads. I got about 15K from a front set with no appreciable disc wear. The back brake also got Goldfren but that brake really was rubbish.
I used it all year around with no brake pad reliability problems.
Motorworks said the R1200GS will work fine with HH pads all around but HH in the back and standard fronts will over-brake the back wheel overwork the ABS and cause even faster rear disc wear.
To my taste, the back wheel feels over braked by the linked system. Maybe HH in front brakes with standard in back wil comparatively reduce the back braking
If that sounds poor mileage, the standard (less powerful) brakes would rub standard organic pads to the metal in 5K miles.

Agree that HH pads are sometimes not the best option for the back brake especially if, unlike my Ducati back brakes, it actually works.

74k and still on original front pads, last mot 45% left.

You don't need to use heavy breaking on a GS it's got plenty of engine breaking.
Keep the callipers clean and check them regularly.

Not had any break fade on any road or alpine passes.

Just my 2 bobs worth.

Cheers Dave.

Unless you want to replace (very expensive) BMW discs as well, stick to OEM.
