If the little PD was mine I'd loose those ugly side panels.

I asked Mick Barr a couple of years ago about the confusing different configurations of the Mono Paris Dakar bikes. Mick was the local BMW dealer during the 1980's and obviously saw the launch of the Paris Dakar bikes. Apparently if a customer ordered a Paris Dakar bike a standard machine was delivered along with the Paris Dakar kit which was installed by the dealer.
The kit is listed on real oem (no longer available) :-
The customers tended to pick and choose what parts they wanted fitting.
Unfortunately Mick isn't with us anymore. Jim Cray was his mechanic during this period if anybody knows him it would be nice to know the history.

Rob got fined £2,000 for abandoning his PD by that gate...and a further £250 from the 'blue frame' fashion Police !!!

Aye, that was going to be the Gambia bike then I got drunk and bought this instead.
of course after a "minor" tidy up it's looking like this
Only 4 months to go better get a move on and get it finished.

Whoa..Last bike I had with chrome handlebars was a Raleigh Griffter!....
I've got part-way to turning my 'standard' g/s into a PD lookee-likee. I've got the big tank (now repainted in the pukka colour plus stickers) and the orange single seat. And very pretty it looks too.
However, after all that, I'm thinking of leaving it stock
with the original slim tank and double seat, as I'll feel much more comfortable off-roading that set-up at GS events.

Would that tank and seat combo fit a para?
I don't know to be honest, I've never owned a para so I don't know what bits are interchangeable.
Rob may know, as he has all the colours in all the sizes!

This is just the sort of answer I was looking for
So there will be loads called Paris Dakar bikes but they look different because even when new you could have different bits on it.
I just like the look of the ones with the white tank and Paris Dakar stickers on it. I remember I was a wee lad when I first saw one of those. Thought they were cool and hence why I got into GSes.
Just wondered what it costs to get a piece of childhood dream.
I get what Roger is saying is correct. I see the same thing in anything with Classic on it. It's all about marketing the myth and it's completely irrational pricing.

I bought my PD & Basic from Germany. The PD was on German Ebay and bought with the help of Proff, the Basic was bought off Mobile.de.
The German people I have dealt with were 100% true to their word and great to buy from.
Living in the south east and so close to the channel ports I would concentrate my search over the water.
Bringing them back is very very easy, and registering them here on an age related plate is also childs play and costs less than £100.
If I remember rightly the PD owed me about £3250 by the time it got home and was road ready.
This is just the sort of answer I was looking for
I was offered a mono g/s in the early 90's for £800 but turned it down because it was overpriced. They were quite often being used for little more than field bikes at that time and were not popular and often badly neglected. The small tank was the one to have and the big tanks were discarded in favour of them. I'm sure Glynn from Nottingham said he had 2 or 3 Paris Dakar tanks sitting in his shed that he had bought cheaply.
