How much fuel can you get in?

On a full tank with half width panniers and top box at full pace I did:

308 miles
6 miles range left on the screen
35.28 litres to fill to capacity

12GSA with filler neck mod.

Conversed is about 9.2 gallons. Yes, I also did 9.2 but only once. Have done several 8.9's and 9.0's.
My total range with a few miles left showing would have been 395 miles.

Sounds about right for me. The most i've managed was about 250 miles fully loaded, cruising at recommended 55mph

Still only 20l fill up tho.

Fully loaded (no pillion) I just got 403 miles and it showed 38 miles left. When I filled up it took 7.8 (US) gallons. Speeds were low as I was touring the back roads of Maine.

Tank volume i don't really know,, but on the trip up to Skye and back, 1500mls, I averaged 58.7MPH and 42mpg fully loaded one up with camping gear, just goes to show how fuel consuption suffers when you get a wriggle on

I honestly know that some petrol stations vary on the readout out. I have been in one with an empty tank and I managed to put in well over 34 litres in my tank. At another station same sort of reading on the petrol gauge I couldn't even go to 32 litres....!?

The 1200GS tank with neck mod holds 23.1 litres. IIFC, my best range with the 1200GS was 284 miles.

Just to add a different view to the Debate,i put as much fuel in the Tank as it needs and when the gauge tells me i need more,i refill.MPG? .

Day'em!!! 51.6 mpg's!!! Sure enough low speeds/rpm's..
Yep once you enter the 4000K rpm range the gas goes bye bye!
Even taller windscreens and wide panniers effect mpg's.

I do know each pump dispences a touch differently. Had done this experiment with a local gas station and a bone dry PD tank on an airhead.

Had this similar conversation last year or two, with an "airhead miles per gallon" thread.
Even a few tenth's of a gallon can show the difference between high 30's mpg's and lo 40's mpg's.

I get on average 350/360 out of my GSA and i don't hang about. Between 60-80 on twisty lanes. Even with the boxes on it's doing the same. Havent tryed it loaded but on the basis i'm the wrong side of 16 stone its like carrying a full load. maybe i'm super smooth i don't know

I believe a US gallon is a fifth of a gallon smaller than a British gallon which means you would have to add 25 percent tothere quoted mpg figures to get a UK mpg reading. I thought everything in the USA was supposed to bigger than ours, but obviously it's not when talking gallons.(or pnts for that matter).
Managed 247 miles on a tank on standard GS, 3 gallons left in range and put in 21 litres exactly. No tank mods.

The US gallon is based on a "wine" gallon IIRC, which as stated is less than a UK one.

Two things, one thing that is smaller in the US and was probably used so that the colonials could truthfully boast about drinking a gallon of beer

Why is it that BMW do not manufacture the tank in its modified form? Surely if they were able to boast an even larger fuel capacity and greater range they would do so? Are there any shortcomings or potential problems that result from making this modification?

I can only think that it is either considered good practice, or it is a legal requirement, to leave a certain volume of "airspace" at the top of the tank to allow for expansion of the fuel.
Fuel stored in a huge tank a few feet underground is always going to be at a lower temperature than when in your tank, so inevitably it will expand after you fill up.
PS. I have done the "tank mod" and do get more fuel in, (hole drilled and ring removal), but equally important to me is that without the rubber ring, the tendency to splash back and spray fuel all over the tank, you, and the garage forecourt is greatly reduced.
