how much is your head worth ?

the problem is, that certain helmets fit certain heads - we all have different shape heads. my head fits an Arai very well, Shoeis don't. motorbikes fuel many irrational purchases, and mine is to spend as much money as i have at the time on whatever Arai are selling at the time. i am on my third, get about five or six years before all the foam bits start disintegrating. your mileage may vary :)

and of all the parts of the bike it seems silly to skimp on..

Ive heard this Shoei/Arai shaped head theory, ive had Arai, Shoei, AGV, HJC and years ago Nava and they all fitted fine. Currently using a Shoei Multitec, which replaced a HJC Syncrotec

IMO Arai's are top for comfort/quality closely followed by Shoei. HJC are great for the money.

Just gave away an Arai RX7RR to a mate who's Arai was falling to bits, mines was just as old, 1996, but hadnt had the use his had.

Whats that your supposed to replace them every three years

The £45 Nitro (£38 in plain colours) is an absolute steal :thumb2

The downside is that it is a big helmet.

Not sure how, but my head fits Arai and Shoei (RX-7 & X-Spirit) :nenau

So - I'll be the one shouting at the emergency crew................

"don't damage my helmet! - just chop my head off!"

Al

Wot, no mention of the feather light jobby.....:nenau

Over recent years I've had two Arai Quantum F's, a BMW System 4, BMW Sport Integral, Schuberth C2 and I'm currently wearing a Shoei XR-1000.

I'd rate them like this:

1. Shoei XR-1000 - quiet, light, comfy, pinlock, good chin & head vents, chinstrap clip a bit fiddly :D
2. Arai Quantum F - comfy, good chin & eyebrow vents, visor lock, crashworthy :D
3. BMW System 4 - buckle chin strap, easy flip, good visor, bit draughty & poor vents :)
4. BMW Sport Integral - quite heavy, feels 'safe', poor vents :augie
5. Schuberth C2 - heavy, useful sun visor, main visor leaked in rain :(

Thinking of trying a Nolan next time for the N-COM bluetooth setup for use with a Zumo :nenau

Wot, no mention of the feather light jobby.....:nenau

Great in concept (not the thieving tw@t - "Chris Holland -Motorrad Concepts"), and great for doing loadsa miles each day (like on a long tour).

BMW's realisation that, the greater the weight of your head (including 1.5kg of normal fibreglass helmet) presents a greater momentum (and hence - damage) to your head and neck in a spill............... hence the 950g Carbon Fibre Integrale "jobby" that CC mentions.

Strange visor system and ventilation, but is a bloody comfy lid.

But........... even Fanum's wife's head - http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=121035 post #4
(who can reportedly suck golf balls through a garden hose :augie) isn't worth the £950 that BMW retail the lid at :rob

Fanum may disagree, of course :augie

Al :thumb2

Mr and Mrs C.Carbon have his'n'her's Carbon Fibre Integrales - as is befitting their position as style icons for all things black and carbon-esque
:bow

The thing with helmets is, you get what you pay for.

All helmets are tested to ECE2205 which in my opinion is a lower standard than the old BS Kitemark and also the USA Snell test.

I do a lot of marshalling at bike racing, so get to see a lot of helmets totalled when people fall off. All I can say is the more expensive they get, the better they stand up. Top of the range Arai's tend to come off with less damage, where I have seen Nitro's and other helmets not come off quite as well, even though they protect the occupant to the same standard, its just that to my mind the more expensive ones do a better job of protecting you. Plus there are multiple shell sizes with Arai and Shoei so they are designed to fit, rather than adding more padding.

I have also heard of a case of a Takachi helmet actually being split in two- I know an ACU senior technical official who personally detests allowing people to race in those helmets even though they are ECE2205 and therefore ACU approved.

I would ALWAYS get a helmet with a double-d fastener. I have seen a few cases of helmets coming undone in crashes, and even seen a handful of cases where the helmet actually came completely off. Any helmet, no matter whether its a pudding basin or Arai Corsair is going to protect you if it doesnt stay on your head.

Your head is actually worthless - If you found someone to buy it, what the feck are they going to do with it :nenau

I would spend £950 on one of those CF jobbies TBH...for me AND for Rosie.......IF they lasted, IF they didn't still need replacing every time you dropped it on a carpet and IF it didn't get scratched up and dinged about like any other helmet.

I must have dropped my Roof Boxer off my bike six times this year- just imagine doing it with a lid that costs a grand!!

PS You bastards.......I'm going to have to make sure she doesn't read the forum now until this drops off the first four or five pages! :blast :D

PPS Safety ratings mean very little in a helmet, as has been proven in many tests over the years.....and the same goes for cost as well- some cheap lids consistently outperform really expensive ones in drop tests etc.

I read in one of the helmet-manufacturer's features in one of the mags, that there isn't a problem with dropping an empty helmet (i.e. one with no head inside) on a carpet or grass or anywhere that doesn't have sharp points that can cause a stress raiser in the structure.

It is only the momentum of helmet and head together that renders the helmet unfit for further use.:rob

The £950 helmet is much the same as Snap-on tools............. you hardly need the guarantee, with them being so damn expensive - you take fantastic care of them.

Al ;)

Arai tour cross or BMW?

I was thinking of buying a new lid, and tried on one of BMW's off road style helmets. I also looked at the Arai tourcross. Both seem very well made, and both are similar prices.

Both also fit and feel pretty simialr. I have had a couple of BM System helmets and been fairly happy with them, but they do feel quite heavy. Would any of these other 2 helmets be a good choice for use as a touring lid.. mainly on road? Also wasnt sure if the peak on the helmet was style thing or if it really is usefull :nenau

But it's utterly priceless to you.

Oh I don't know, if someone cut my head off I don't think I'd spend much time running around looking for it:augie

As my mother used to say, "Don't come running to me if you break your leg doing that on your bike..."
