Hi all
If I pull/push the wheel at 6/12 3/9 I can feel a tiny bit of play but the bit that worries me is when I select first gear I can move the wheel about 3 cm
The higher the gear I select the more movement I get
2005 r1200 53000 miles
I know these bikes do that but seems a lot to me
I've had shafties before that never did that
Cheers all

3cm in rotational direction? ie clock/ anticlockwise?

That would be backlash ....

if you have 3 cm in the 3 / 6 / 9 / 12 accross the bike, you many have a slightly bigger problem ;)

The backlash i wouldn't worry about as that's normal and there will be more in higher gear due to the gears in mesh but
the other movement is another story in that ideally, there should be no perceptible play so, on yours the bearings are worn.
That said, failure is probably far from imminent. As long as there are no oil leaks and or roughness i would just ride it and keep it under
observation.

No oil
I can just feel a slight play not much at all
And yes the 3cm play is rotational lol
Imagine 3cm play 6/12 lol
Bikes a keeper so will get it looked at but not yet
Cheers

IIRC the maximum play at 6/12 and 3/9 is 1mm.
If I am wrong then I`m sure someone will put me right!!

Think Bmw spec at 6 /12 is 1mm, All will have some play, was bit concerned when I first got my GS so tried a brand new GS in the show room and it had a small amount of play if pushed pulled firmly .measured my play with dial gauge as 0.4 mm total ,so far it's remained constant over 4 years 😉

I'm talking tiniest amount of play ,barely perceptible, apparently bearing has to have some play in it to function 🤗

As i said, if i can manually discern it, it's too much and it would be rejected but, on a bike like mine
with 55K on the clock i would accept some but it's only a matter of time. At the moment though, i can detect
no free play at all. The same cannot be said for the pinion bearings though so, the final drive is going to get
rebuilt when i decide it's too much free play or starts to give trouble.

A small amount of side play (measured at the rim) is normal but more than 2mm suggests the bearing is getting to the point of replacement.

The bigger question is the pinion nose bearing right inside the FD. You can't measure it for wear but if it breaks up the debris will wreck the final drive. Mine was rebuilt by Mike at 50,000 miles when the wheel bearing seals failed. He said all bearings were at end of life. Patzx12 found a worn nose bearing at 17K miles. See post 13.

good thread that. I do know the FD is on borrowed time now i have found a small amount (just perceptible) of lift in the pinion shaft.

As far as I know the outer pinion bearing is a sealed grease type. Even the slightest detectable movement means the inner needle roller bearing is loose. When it collapses debris will scrap the FD. Get it rebuilt YKIMS.

does anybody do an exchange...i know theres a couple on here that offer a fd rebuild but what about a recon exchange service...
or what about a ride in ride out service.....just an idea....
i use my bike for work and dont get much time off so a service like that would be worth paying for....and recon shaft...

Mikeyboy will do you a ride in ride out service.

has he got a web site...i did pm him but he must be busy.didnt reply

I send my FD to Mikey by Hermes and he returned it the same way. It needs a strong plastic bag inside a strong packing box and LOADS of bubble wrap but arrived all fine both ways.

I have had two done by Mikeyboy, one of mine for a previous bike (at 13000 miles!) and one for a mate and used Hermes both times.
