On average what is the price for labour for this?

I'd attempt it myself but I'm a busy man :augie

Regards

Dont be a fanny, Go get your hands dirty. I think it would take you about 2 hours tops with the right tools.
I would think a BMW mechanic would charge 1 hours labour..
You can get aftermarket chain and sprockets but to be honest the main dealer prices are quite good as well..
OEM chain needs the swing arm to be removed but the after market chain needs a rivet tool...go on ya know ya want ta.....Tosh
As for a price I would say about £60 to £80

Right ... I'm going to tackle this :mmmm
Chain and sprockets ordered today so be prepared for lots of questions! I've aquired the Rep-Rom Repair manual (electronic version) so I've been looking over that ....
3 hours job will probably take me 8 :eek

Cheers Tosh!

Just been reading the Rep manual and it says if the Chain take up roller and slide rail show signs of scoring then replace them ... Mine are 'kin well scored! Are these readily available from BMW?

Don't worry about that one! Ordered them from Rainbow Rotherham.

Just remember to undo the front sproket before you start taking everything else apart.

As above...Also crack the nuts on the rear sprocket before anything else...Locktite isnt a friend here..
DONT be afraid to ask ANY questions...They are not stupid questions but you would be stupid to carry on and do some damage...
Have you bought aftermarket or OEM chain ??
So ask away..
PS..When the rear wheel is out DONT touch the rear brake..Good luck
Here's one I made earlier

Hi Tosh.. Ended up buying a Tsubaki heavy duty x ring chain in the end.
Any tips on fitting the masterlink? Am I gonna have to buy a chain tool to press the masterlink together?
Fun starts on Monday when I have a day off. :tears

Hi mate, have you got the old chain off ??? If not just use a grinder and grind the rivets off, Im sure you will figure it out..BE CAREFULL---SAFTY FIRST..
Next you will need a chain riveting tool, Plenty on eBay or at a local bike shop..Now remember that these tools are not cheap BUT once you have bought one you have that tool for life,
This video is a bit slow but it is accurate, The first half is chain breaking, a lot of tools break doing this. That's why a lot of people just grind the top of the rivets off and break the chain using a chisel and a hammer..
Its the second part that is relevant to you..

Dont forget to take your time, study the video and many more like it and most of all ,,,BE CAREFULL...good luck ..Tosh
The tool you are looking for is something like this..Not necessarily this one but you get the idea

.

Thanks for the tips fellas, just off to Rainbow to collect a couple of bits then I'll get started. Ordered a Sealey chain tool off ebay but paid slightly more than the one you put a link to Tosh :blast

I'll get the sprockets fitted but the chain will have to wait until my chain tool arrives :drool

Looks like I'll be grinding the old one off.

Rainbow BMW closed on a Monday :blast

Had a nice blast out in the wind if nothing else!

Well that was a lot easier than I expected :thumb (so far so good)

Sprockets are on and it also gave me the chance to give my swing arm and rear wheel a good clean :D

The counter shaft sprocket nut was a bitch to get off but a bit of elbow grease showed it who was boss  needed a great whopping wrench!

One thing that I need to know ... When I initially removed the rear wheel, the spacer that sits between the brake caliper and wheel hub just fell off (I think this is the norm?) Inside the spacer however was a type of thin wire coiled washer thingy that has perished. Do I need to replace this as I'm sure in its present state it wasn't doing much anyhow!? :eek

This is it:

I'm awaiting delivery of my chain tool to fit the new chain so that'll probably be tomorrow night after work. If anyone has any top tips on wheel allignment then I'll take them! How difficult can it be

anyhow this is how bad my rear sprocket was  I'll have to stop trying to pop wheelies as often (I blame the last owner really) ;)

Ask my 3 legged dog, even he knows:thumb

The rear seal is knackered you need to replace that/those asap so check the bearings for play and while your there, check the cush drive...that'll be wrecked too:D

You're very lucky the chain didn't jump, locking the rear wheel:comfort
The rear sprocket isn't worn through wheelies, that tends to wreck the front more but it's from poor/no maintenance.

We briefly teach this level of maintenance even at CBT level, if you're going to touch you're bike I suggest you get a proper manual. Your safety depends on it:D:rob

That's the reason I'm changing it :nenau
And I've got the proper manual :type just after some friendly advice :thumb

Hi Jona.
Tim is absolutely spot on. ( he knows alot more than me) Your seal is fubar. As for part number I just go to any BMW main dealers and get them to match on their computer...
As for wheel alignment, Ive been having trouble until I bought this..

Now my chain is perfect with the 30mm free play on the side stand...
I live in Hull so you are more than welcome to pop down and I will get my tool on it for perfect alignment...Tosh

Thanks Tosh, and I do appreciate Tim's diagnosis and advice. In fact anyones advice! I love tinkering and am always willing to try but I'm no professional mechanic :D ...
I may take you up on the offer of wheel alignment with your new laser! I'm back at work Friday and Sunday (24hr shifts) and have a couple of days off after that, Let me know if the offer still stands and I'll pop over when it's convenient for you if you don't mind mate :thumb2
