how often do you change the oil in the rear diff and gear box

whats every one do. flush it when i do the engine oil or run it for longer 1150 gs

For the cost of the oil and the time it takes makes sense to do it whenever you change the engine oil. That is what I have always done.

Regardless of how often you change the oil in that particular component, it will never be a "diff". It doesn't perform any differential function. It's a bevel final drive.

When, and only when, it gets milky.

But then again, that used to be every three or four months, so maybe this newer GSA needs one soon :blast

I think the manual for my 1100 says every 12k, but I do mine every 6 with engine oil.

As above, so if you do a long trip in the summer it can be as little as 3 weeks between changes

The FD takes such a small amount that a 1 litre bottle will last a long time so don't scrimp as they seem to have a habit of self destructing if neglected..

My bike has 45,000 miles on it

And since I bought it with 9,000 miles and 1.5 years old, it has never had the oil in either checked or changed in either unit.
I do not plan on checking or changing in the future, unless I see a drip below the bike.

Every oil change at about 4k it's cheap so why not:nenau

Knowing nothing about this, why so often? Isn't the housing just a pair of bevel gears & bearings?
Lots of machines with gear/reduction/final drives, that don't require oil changes at such short intervals, many cars have no specific gearbox oil change interval & sealed for life.

3-4k seems like excessive paranoia.

You got it in one.
BMW have had lots of problems with these units, and changed their suggested oil change intervals from "sealed for life" to change oil every 6,000 miles.
However, the reality is that the problem is/was an assembly/alignment/shimming problem, and you either get a good one or a bad one. If you get a bad one, no amount of oil changes are going to fix it.
And, anyway, why every 4,000 miles? Why not every 2,000? Or maybe every time you ride round the block?
Nonsense.

1100 - every 12,000 miles or once a year regardless. 150,000 miles and no problems so far :thumby:

:thumby:

Not just me that changes the oil at 3-4k then.

Always have done on all my shift driven bikes from my first XS 850 through my Guzzi period and for the last 32 yrs with BMW.
Starting with a nice new R 100 RS at 23yrs old in 1983...
Where did all the yrs go....

I change mine every second year (and gearbox).
The oil is cheap and it is easy to change.
One advantage of changing the oil is to look for metal bits which may indicate imminent failure!

Lucky you check every two years
