Always thought the orange alloy bar that slides into the pannier handle on the system panniers was quite substantial, that was untill I broke it :eek
Its actually only about 10-12mm wide.

And the word from BMW is you cant buy it separate but as a complete unit, handles and all, costing in excess of £100

Even more of a pain is Ive lost the bit that snapped off.

Might pop ot B&Q and see what panel locks they sell :D

You have previously damaged it (them). It's a typical mistake, lifting the upper handlebar up ( to take the boxes off the bike) and you've taken the key out meaning you've rotated it to locking position while the boxes handlebar is up.

Next thing you know you try to put the panniers back on to the bike and to fix them by pushing the handlebar down but it aint going fully down, you force a bit more and then finally see it's the red locking fekker on the way, but it's too late already - you've already kracked the thing by pushing the thing on it (it has stupid angle as well - much torque applyed with little force). It stays OK if it's cracked like mine was and still stayed on after i bent it back, but some day it'll finally brake if doing the same mistake again. In terms of that mistake is easy to come - it's a bit stupid system designed by BM (or acctually it's H&B who makes them under BM trademark).

These red key fixing things never krack on huge stress by panniers by simple design - they take no forces. It's rather pannier frame that backs off rather than this fixing part.

So i think you got lesson learned. Tho, I'd let the part to be done on local metal workshop like me did. It won't be cheap tho, but much cheaper than from BM.

Cheers, Margus :beerjug:

Oh b***er..... :D

Its not just me then  :D .... Sorry to hear about the breakage Stef... they are so hard to close that you don't realise when the bar is across (sometimes) when closing the handles...

Managed to bend mine right down on Friday morning when loading the bike for the weekend... I had a right job trying to bend it back up again :spitfire and actually got quite emotional at one point as they did work so smoothly before... :tears ...girl thing probably... :mmmm

It seems to work ok-ish now... I realise that they're not the rufty tufty alli jobs but I like the way they're so easily removed from the bike and can be carried like suitcases when arriving at destinations... they'll do for me... :thumb

Ive heard that Motoworks does a kit for around £25 need to investigate. I like the system panniers as the fit nice and neat on the bike without being overly bulky and their not wider than my Renthal bars :D

I always meant to modify the lock so the key can be removed whilst in the unlocked position. I cant remember if I threw the missing part in the bin or its somewhere in the garage :nenau

I'll go see a friend who has a lathe maybe we can knock something up to replace the O/E lock

not a good idea - it'll overtake you one day as you go over a bump then brake for turning.

( guess how i know :D )

I am almost certain that a friend of mine had the same problem with a damaged pannier and got a repair kit from Rainbow for about £25.

Rainbow supplied fitted one for me, just a walk-in, and they did there and then, £50 the lot - may be worth a look

we should really have a bunch done by some workshop...it would be much cheaper next time...cos am sure i'll break it again

Right started putting the various bits together to make a working pannier, got as far as riviting in the new arm turny bit, decided to try the handles to make sure everything was ok before going further and THEY DONT FERKING GO DOWN ! :spitfire

One of the little pins at the side looks bent, dont know if its got bent whilst working with it or with me putting pressure on the handles to lock
