I have been searching for a step by step guide (with pic if pos) to changing the gearbox oil on R12GS but can't find one.

It can't be all that hard but would like to know exactly which drain to remove and where and how to fill, crush washers required? Torque values? etc

Thanks in advance

It really is dead simple. I can do it, and my technical skills don't even extend to being able to post pictures on here very easily. Check back in ten minutes and I'l see what I can do...

You will need two crush washers, but without taking mine off I can't tell you what size they are. Call or order a selection from Motorworks - they're pence each.

Torque settings: drain plug and filler plug both 30Nm.

You fill it until it just starts to leak out of the filler - around 0.8 litres. Specification of oil is "Brand name hypoid-gear lubricant SAE 90 API GL 5". I use Mobil or Castrol semi-synthetic stuff from Halfords.

EDIT

Here's the filler - an Allen bolt:

Here's the drain - a hex bolt:

You might also find that by postioning a piece of plastic or cardboard beneath the drain plug, you can stop the old oild running over the exhaust. Have a look at this area and ypu'll see what I mean

A plastic bin liner over the exhaust to stop the oil dripping on it is a good idea provided the exhaust is cold enough :augie
