HOW TO ENSURE A BATTERY IS HEALTHY?

So - Odyssee PC535GS battery or :nenau

Very overpriced and not worth it it IMHO. You can pick up an exide to the same spec as the OEM battery for around £40 or you can try a Motobatt gel battery for around £50. The Motobatt has very good cranking power. My bike lives outside and is not connected to any charger. I didn't ride it for a few weeks due to work commitments and started on the button last week even though it had been very cold:thumby:

I bought a nearly new Odyssey battery from this very site for a very reasonable price, but to be honest the bike bike starts just as it ever did. Its a lead acid battery.

If I was buying brand new I would just get an ordinary lead acid for £40 or the opposite extreme for a lightweight LiFePO4 lithium iron phosphate. Does a GS need to save a kg or two? Probably, but not at £50+ a kg. At least Ballistic batts have a long service life, no acid to spill and there's the bling farkle factor.

Put a volt meter on the bike. It will show the volts drop as the starter is used and how voltage stays a bit below normal as the charging system tops up the battery then it will be back to normal running volts. A failing battery will show more starter volt drop and might take longer to recover or the voltage might stay lower for longer than it used to do after the engine starts. The long term trends will tell if the battery is failing. An analogue gauge is more useful than LED lights or an LED strip meter.
