Hi all,

Excuse my technical muppetry but I have been downloading all of the wonderful waypoint data for Burger King et al however, my 2610 is telling me that I have exceeded the number of waypoints allowed - any ideas or can I not have all of the data in at the same time?

Many thanks for any steers!

Nick

Haven't got the manual to hand but IIRC I think you're limited to a maximum of 500 waypoints.

Greg,

Your point is........

Maybe he thinks you are a bit of a :tosser, either for eating shite at Burger King or trying to put all the waypoints into your 2610 :D :D :D
You have definitley overloaded your machine Nick so you need to clean it up.
I have a waypoint file which I use by uploading or downloading. If you already have lots of personal waypoints on your machine upload the lot and save the file. Sort them out into a file system that works for you by copying and pasting. Delete all superfluous waypoints on your 2610. Then, open a file and copy and paste any other waypoints you need onto it and download it to your 2610. Update and delete as necessary.
I am not a guru but this works for me. :beerjug: :beerjug:

Each to his own I suppose, but in my 2610 I have waypoints like:

  • Stalag Luft III
  • The BMW bike factory in Berlin
  • A water theme park in the Costa del Sol

You have Burger Kings.

I have nothing against BKs (arguably better than Macs), but I guess my priorities are different. If you'd loaded quality wine bars, I'd have been with you all the way!

A general advice is to not store anything (long term) on the GPS itself. It may lock-up at any time and you may then loose all data when resetting.

Waypoints should be stored in one or several MapSource files on your PC. When you want to add waypoints to the GPS the best practise is to -

1-delete ALL waypoints & routes in the GPS and
2-upload a new set of waypoints & routes to the GPS from your PC.

Thanks for the response, it's amazing the conclusions people draw from a simple post.

My question was asked because Burger King was the first set of Waypoints on the sticky (hence the use of the term 'et al') not because I live on shite like that! Perhaps I should have said English Heritage sites and I'd have received a different response.

I had assumed and hoped that as each Waypoint file was so small (a few kB against a 2 GB card) in the sticky that I could just load all of the Waypoint data files into the machine and they would be there should I ever need them much like the speed camera database - clearly this is not the case. I thought it would be easier to pose the question on this site than read the manual - and I was right.

I am not a software geek, I did my Eng degree in Electronic Sytems!

Thanks

Nick

Nick, I think the problem is that the waypoints don't get stored on the card but on the internal memory of the unit.

Glad you found my waypoint files worthy of download :thumb

how do you delete all the waypoints/routes on a 2610?

Delete All Waypoints.

Press FIND, scroll down to find and select WAYPOINTS. While viewing a list of waypoint, press MENU. An option will appear to delete all waypoints.

Dunno about bulk route deletes though :nenau

Even worse, then you would have been a :ymca :tosser :D
Don't take it too seriously, this is a GS site but who would buy one after reading the posts on here? Especially one of the crap 12GSAs! :D :D :D

Now, I realised that SeaGS used the "burger king" example deliberately (and not cos he eats them),

but since we have touched on the subject, can I give the following recommendation................................

Buy the book: "Fast Food Nation" by Eric Schlosser.

A review here

The first third: A great insight into how the American fast food industry grew.

The middle bit: You're starting to get a bit worried about the (American) meat industry.

The last bit: By the time you put the book down - you will never again visit Macdonalds/BurgerKing etc.

Stunning book :thumb

Delete all routes is MENU/route. Select Route, Select Route list, select MENU
Select Delete all

It was only one entry, and not a starting point for a discussion - just a recommendation :o

Apologies if warranted, though :)

I can see what you're trying to do SeaGS but sadly loading every waypoint from every database won't work, as there must be literally thousands in Kevins posts alone, and I'm sure that 500 is your limit. :eek

HMR has alreay mentioned it, but IIWY I would have one "Master File" on your PC with different categories eg one for Burger King, one for McDonalds, one for lap dancing clubs, class wine bars, English Heritage sites etc etc etc, then when you plan a route say London - Paris you cherry pick the waypoints from each category in your Master File that are close to the route you're planning, and save that as a separate file. (Don't forget you can have a max of 16 categories). Eg, there's no pint clogging the unit with every Burger King site in the UK when probably 95% of them will be nowhere near your route. A waypoint in Lands End is of no use to you when travelling from London - Paris.

By default I think that all waypoints are stored on the computer alphabetically, but by clicking on the top of the relevant column this can be changed to North / South. Then using your "Ctrl" button and clicking on the waypoints, you can see highlited which waypoints from each file you need to copy and paste into your London - Paris file. NB. The first waypoints to set are always "Home" and destination :thumb and always copy and paste, never cut and paste. So you may copy and paste say 30 waypoints from the Burger King category, 45 from the McDonalds category etc.

After a trip, the first thing I do is to download from the unit to the PC all the tracks and waypoints (there are almost guaranteed to be new waypoints you've picked up on your travels) delete the ones you've already got (so leaving the new ones) give each one a category, re-name it if necessary and give it a symbol then cut and paste the new waypoints into my "Master File". It works for me anyway. :thumb
