How to make a Canbus GPS cable for a 1200GS

The output is very definitely 12V, why do some think it may be 5? Very odd.

Bought the relevant cables from BMW and Garmin, the BMW numbers were on the cables, albeit not very clearly but decipherable.

:beerjug: Thanks for the original article, fortuitously I'm geeky enough to have the requisite tools, did notice NN's did a made up lead if you don't know how to solder.....

I want to do this to my gs, I presume there is 4.8V output from the bike, as my Garmin has a 12 to 4.8 transformer on the cable designed to connect to the battery?

Thanks good article, however when I did this the result was no voltage, I will explain more.
I checked the output from the connected plug and found as you say 12.6 Volts supplied, so I soldered on the wire for my Tomtom active mount and checked the ouput 12.8 Volts as before, plugged it into the mount which steps down the voltage to 4.8 for the GPS and checked the output 0 volts unit did not work. I then checked the voltage at the soldered connection and found only 3.8 volts very strange. Disconnecting the wire from the Active mount 12.8 volts back again. Any ideas?

Thanks

Wired my Zumo 350 using the canbus plug, loses its live now and then when riding, Plus flats the battery when left over night. Thats with the sat nav not even connected.
Afraid not a success story.

Anyone have ideas why its draining the power?

I assume you are plugging into the head stock spare? If so that should turn off when no ignition?

Yes its plugged in the headstock. But the live drops out and its drained the battery. Just checked the [email protected] going to check in the morning.

Bit confused as the sat nav unit is not connected over night. Might be worth me checking the connectors to see if live after ignition is off.

Thanks very much for this thread! Very useful as I've just bought a TomTom Rider (v5) and have it directly wired to the battery at the moment. The solution using the accessories connector is much nicer.:beerjug:

Had a look in the workshop manual so please find attached BMW's take on the matter. If more detail is required please let me know.

(If you are interested in the workshop maintenance repair manual as I can provide one that covers pretty much ALL BMW models up to 2013. You can contact me on rockwillneverdie AT hotmail DOT co DOT uk)

The Beast....

Thank you the heads up on the manuals etc. Thank you also for the very clear diagrams.

It would be easiest for bods to contact you via PM (Private Message) but it's only possible if you (and they) subscribe to the site.

No problem. Least I can do after all the effort others have put in providing such usefull information.
Hope it didn't come accross as a shameless plug trying to flog these manuals as I'm not after making money. As long as it covers cost and my time it's fine with me.

Thanks for the warning about the PM only being available for subscribed members. Didn't realize this.

Hiya,

Wonder whether this switched feed would provide what I'm looking for to provide low current feed to aux light relay via 'bar mounted switch. I've a set of touratech aux lamps that I bought 2nd hand with a relay I can readily draw a heavy fused feed direct ex battery but need a reliable switched feed to ensure the lights dont stay on if I forget and simultaneously wont disturb / overload / confuse the canbus etc.

can I use this method to wire the power lead from my nuvi car sat nav into the bikes system .
