Hey all

I have purchased a R80 GSPD petrol tank. It has petcocks, but no petrol cap at this time. Whats the best way to store the tank until I get round to using it? Ideally I could do with sourcing a petrol cap. However I note from pictures they are vented, either a tube out the the top of the cap straight up or a vent that comes out of the side of the cap. Not sure on the merits of either? I wont be using a tank bag so the vertical venting tube isn't necessarily a problem for me.

Should I seal the top with some cling film for the time being and leave in a spare room as opposed to the garage? Its in good nick at the moment and I'd like to keep it that way, as I doubt I'll be using it for a wee while?

It’s impossible to store a tank safely. It’s going to rust and disintegrate in a couple of weeks. What you should really do is sell it to me 😜

Now would be a good time to check and renew, if necessary, the internal liner. And the best place is somewhere dry, free from condensation (lofts generally aren’t). Airing cupboard? Spare bedroom?

Probably be worth swilling some oil around inside and drain, then washout with petrol prior to fitting. Then treat as above.

Only just found the bugger!

Remove the petcocks and store the tank in a vacuum storage bag.

You could of course spend £30 and epoxy seal the insides now. Or a bit more if you need the cleaning and rust conversion chemicals.

This is how they are stored at BMW (Germany) and how they arrive after you have arranged for small a mortgage to buy a new one.

It’s just a round piece of tape, similar to gaffer tape or thick masking tape. I’d use gaffer tape as masking tape can be a sod to get rid of if it’s on anywhere for too long.

Hope it helps.
