I have an 01 1150 gs with a GIVI top box. The box seems to shake a hell of a lot when going over bumpy roads or tracks etc. Is there any way to reinforce the mounting to make it more solid ?? :nenau

Mine does on my 1100....sometimes rather alarmingly.

As far as I can tell,it`s the box moving on it`s mounting plate...I was considering something like a layer of foam on the plate to make the box tighter on the 'hooks' it fits into.

Wobblybox

Hope this helps, I broke mine on a trip to Romania, it also broke the silver sub frame so there has been some work involved. the Givi mount is the standard ali mount (the horrid plastic one gave up) under that is an ali plate 12 x 14 inches X 5mm. As you can see there is a bracing bar going forward and down to the pannier cross brace (civils panniers and excelent bits of kit they are too)
I weigh close to 18 stone and I have sat on the the new mounting with no ill effects to the bike or me, it may not be pretty but like most of my stuff it works.
sorry the pics are so big (about 1.3 megs each, but if they have got there im as chuffed as a fart cos its my first time.)
Take care

BMW make a proper reinforcing bracket, which goes under the rack and back to the pannier mounts, it's reaonably priced aswell can't remember off hand how much, try your local dealer.

Wunderlich do one as well. May be the same item.

A packet of Viagra in the top box might help

A reinforcing bracket came with my Givi kit. Have you got this fitted? It's a 90 degree bent piece of mild steel

Same here with my Givi plate, but the box does wobble a bit. (My mate had a Kappa box / plate fitted to his GS by a well-known dealer, but when he took the seat off, they'd used a universal mounting plate and by bolting through the existing "silver frame" had inadvertantly placed the Kappa plate over the tool box lid, effectively blocking it off..oh how he laughed!!)

I noticed my BMW std topbox was wobbling excessively today, and on closer inspection has broken the siver plate in several places (1100GS). I know i ride bumpy roads like an idiot, but that's what it's for isn't it??

Is there a cheap way of getting another std rack plate??, i'll worry about modding it when i see it off the bike.

Mine, and others, got the multiple fractures. However, I think I paid about £50 for a new one from Pidcocks, so its not too bad. The replacement was a slightly beefed up one that was introduced to help alleviate the problem (available under warranty at the time I believe.
