HP2 Enters the Hafren Rally December 4th Mid Wales

Surprised no-one's mentioned the two HP2s that did the Baja 1000 last week. Finished 11th & 14th overall with a 3rd in class.
Only 5 hours behind the winnning XR650 of Hengeveld/Campbell/Childress (gulp!) and an hour and a half behind Robert Laughlin, the first iron man (double gulp!)
Some probs with the much-vaunted air suspension, it seems.

There were actually three HP2 teams, the Cabo entry was a DNF. (drive shaft)
This years course was far from big bike friendly with two 250cc bikes finishing in
the top six. I rode a little over 200 miles of the course on my HP2 before and after
the race and I am in awe of folks that can "race" those big bikes around that course....

I went along to the Hafren with a bunch of friends from another Forum, we were running KTM's, Husky's and Yams mainly.
The pit area was like the Somme, rivers of mud and more rain added to it during the day.
We set up directly opposite the BMW Motorrad gazebo and had a good view of all their kit, some of it looked very tasty, especially the white GSA with the 'false' exhaust can, it's actually a toolkit, very ingenious.
The HP2's sounded awesome btw.
We went up to the MX track to spectate and managed to see Jonty flying through there at a rate of knots.
I think they had a problem later in the day with one of the HP2's, the rear tyre spinning on the rim and ripping out the valve, but don't quote me on that.
There were a few other BM's out, a couple of F650's and GSA's, there was also a much older bike out as well, was it a GS80? (don't know the old ones very well I'm afraid)
I took a fair few photo's and will post them as soon as I can dig all my kit out of the bag of mud I seem to have bought home with me!

I saw Jonty's HP2 with a very flat rear tyre and wobbly looking back wheel. I think it was just a plain old puncture, but ask Earthmover, he was "on the scene" as it were :)

The R80GS belongs to Phil Gunn I think.

On the second lap (which was the first where the special stages were timed) upon finishing the second special, Andy and I came across Jonty Edmunds. His HP2 was leaning on it's right hand sidestand, ie the cylinder, as he tried to force the back tyre over the security bolts on the rim with a small screwdriver. As we both carry tyre levers, we lent them to him and he explained what had happened. He had felt the flat in the first part of the stage, an undulating section of single track going, with some assorted rockery and lumps of tree scatered about. He must have caught one of these in passing, but thought he could make it to the end of the stage. Sadly the tyre came off the rim and ripped the valve out of the tube, in the latter part where the ground was whooped out from the Hafren Enduro earlier this year. He tried to get the tyre back on with a stick, and ended up pushing the bike out of the stage, and that was where we found him. Paul Blezard, on the second HP2, arrived in time to take pictures of the scene. With the tyre back on the rim, and the rim locks tightened up, Jonty's intention was to take the shortest route back to the pits to get a new tube. When we passed him a few seconds later, the noise of the wheel on the gravel didn't sound too healthy. At least he made it back under his own steam, the number of bikes that had died out on the course led the organisers to cut the last lap for fear of too many riders ending up left out overnight.
There were two R80's IIRC, and yes, Phil was one of them.

pity about jonty

Jonty's 1st test time was the quickest of the whole event and if he kept going he might have won the event outright what a rider _ what a bike

gunner

ps the event was wont by edmondston with eland behind

Really??? Uhmmmmw...What a pity then, damn why that bad luck only strikes the good guys :(

Back next year then? :bow

Impressive to me, given that the last time I attempted the Hafren I was on a KLX250R and finished way down the rankings....

Only Wales really does wet..... :beerjug:

I've put some photo's up that inculde the HP2's at the Hafren on one of my sites the link is here:

I've got some more of the bikes on another film but I've put the film in one of my kit bags somewhere...grrr!!

Very good shots - much more lively and life-true as film makes them! You must have a huge kit if you can't find yer other filmroll ;)

You shot them on a negative right (judging by the warmer colours and less contrast, but i may be wrong)?

Yep shot on the old 'steam powered' stuff. Can't beat it as far as I'm concerned. I just don't use it enough anymore. ;)
