BMW pressclub have revealed plans for a supermoto based on the HP2...looks good

BMW HP2 Megamoto
10/18/2006

Introducing the Megamoto, BMW is Upgrading the Exclusive HP2 Family with a Dynamic Supermoto Machine.
Introducing new motorcycle concepts with an even higher level of emotion, BMW Motorrad is proudly presenting the new Megamoto: Based on the BMW HP2 Enduro, this unique motorcycle will rank right at the top among all street-legal two-cylinder Supermotos thanks to its supreme performance and the use of top-class materials. Consistently following the HP2 model line, the Megamoto impressively demonstrates the outstanding dynamism and broad range of the Boxer concept.

Weighing less than 200 kilos or 440 lb in road trim, the Megamoto offers significantly more power and torque than even the powerful HP2 Enduro. And to meet the specific demands of sports surfing on country roads as well as the toughest conditions on the race track, the extra-firm, lowered suspension comes with truly outstanding components: At the front a fully adjustable, fine-response upside-down fork from Marzocchi with sliding tubes measuring an impressive 45 millimetres or 1.77" in diameter and with 160 millimetres /6.30" spring travel ensures superior wheel guidance at all times. At the rear an Öhlins spring strut with 180 millimetres/7.09" spring travel also adjustable in its basic spring setting, damper inbound and rebound stroke, likewise ensures a firm and muscular stance on the road.

The rims and tyres are also tailored ideally to specific road-going requirements: The front tyre measures 120/70-ZR 17 and runs on a 3.5-inch rim, the rear tyre is 180/55 ZR 17 in size and runs on a 5.5-inch rim in the usual supersports dimension.

To make even better use of the stable suspension with its great potential, the new BMW HP2 Megamoto comes with a second brake disc ensuring stopping power and deceleration absolutely comparable to a modern road-going sports machine. Good news for the rational enthusiast is that both a rev counter and a new headlight, as well as the significantly lower seat, give the Megamoto an even higher standard of
everyday riding qualities.

The very looks of the new machine and the choice of the most exclusive materials again help to make the BMW HP2 Megamoto absolutely fascinating and emotional in every respect. The tank cover and headlight fairing, for example, are both made in part of carbon.

The double-chamber Akrapovic exhaust system gives the new Megamoto a powerful and throaty sound very appropriate for a machine of this kind. And at the same time
the exhaust system not only helps to boost engine power, but also refines the overall image and style of BMW Motorrad's new Supermoto. In re-configuring the Boxer power unit so full of character, the engineers responsible for the new machine have focused in particular on even more spontaneous response and supreme torque at low and medium engine speeds.

With its very active, front wheel-oriented seating position, its smooth balance and impressive ergonomic qualities, the Megamoto will certainly appeal to all connoisseurs, individualists and pleasure-conscious riders within the segment of dynamic motorcyclists. Simply because this new machine offers a brand-new interpretation of Sheer Riding Pleasure and light handling, making it a truly uncompromomising riding machine in all its features: light, powerful, agile and, in particular, very exclusive.

This exclusivity is ensured by the limited production figures of the BMW HP2 Megamoto, since the machine is built by hand to a large extent and uses very exclusive materials. So the individualist opting for the Megamoto, this explosive combination of high-tech and powerful character, of emotion and function, should also be willing and able to take a bold but wise decision…

That ain't no motard

Looks funky but is it in the true sense a Motard. as a road tool it could be fun if they've managed to get a 180 rear tyre onto it (converted HP2 would only alow 150 tyre) and in the foot out slide it around back it in world of motard it'd be useless plus yer shins are going to get battered. ooow I can hear the drive shaft clatter and skip as the first guy fails trying to back that thing into the first roundabout.
It's a bit like putting a spoiler on a truck and saying its design was inspired by F1 racing.... :thumb

I do wonder if this is an all new bike or just a re vamped HP2 to get rid of stock, also is the engine really changed or is it just the can that makes so much difference, I saw the spec claimed at +10 BHP and +10 Nm over the standard HP2 on another site

I got a phonecall from Pidcocks today, ref the HP2 Megamoto.BMW released the details on Wednesday.23 Bikes are available from BMWGB.Bikes will be sent out to Dealers with a Firm Sale only,No Demonstrators ,No Bikes sitting in showrooms, unsold. No extras available,RRP £12500.

It's gonna cost me £5500 to trade my 06 GS12, , , , , , and much as i like the Megamoto,that figure is just a tad too salty.

I must say I loved the look of the Megamoney when I saw it at the NEC.

But £12500 is taking the piss.

Go get yourself a test ride on one of these instead and save yourself more than £4000 !!!.Stunning bike in all respects.

Dunno 'bout the Superduke, but i tried a 950 Supermoto.Abso-Bleedin-Lutely BARKING !! Just could not ride it in a sensible manner(and now n again you do need to ),picks up and goes with no provocation at all, great fun,but a bit too focussed.Got a deal offered for my GS,but turned it down. . . .

For now !

Ladies and Gentlemen we have a winner for this weeks "Super-Rant"

Oh,and mind you don't get an arse full of splinters, sitting on that fence.:augie

Has anyone seen a comparison of the HP2 versus the Ducati yet? On paper the HP2 in motard trim should be quicker and the Ducati is just plain fuglee whilst the HP2 is kinda quirky in minimalist way :D

I know which one I prefer and with a couple of subtle mods the HP2 is a clear winner for me :thumb

The front forks look very similar to the HP2 forks and if they are the sameit will be vey interesting when they slam on the front double disks.. I picked up a HP2 yesterday and rode 540 miles home on it. Fantastic bike but got caught out a few times by the long travel forks. Hopefully the tank can be adapted for the HP2 as I was going onto empty after just 100 miles. What a bike though:thumb

im in total agreement with you but i will post a opinion next week when ive rode the ducati , ive just put maxxis gold speeds on mine for the track day at cadwell just in case it pee's down , im anxious to try my modded forks out to their full potential ,heavy braking at the bottom of mansfield ought to be the test , may be a slight wheelie over the mountain???

may be a slight wheelie over the mountain???
Slacker!! I am sure you will get a bit more than slight' :D I will be interested to hear how the forks and rest of the bike performs, take loads of fuel and good luck with the weather, looking forward to some pictures. :thumb

Just to add that this MegaMoto thingy just raced:

First win for the HP2 Megamoto!

Last weekend, BMW Motorrad’s new HP2 Megamoto scored its first international victory on its world première race debut at the first Belgian Moto Tour event. The victory was taken by local rider Fred Lejeune on the 110 hp sports boxer against an international field of riders and bikes from all the major manufacturers. Compatriot Didier de Radiguès added to this great result by winning a special stage and finishing in 10th place overall with the second HP2 Megamoto.

Following the growing success of the French Dark Dog Moto Tour event, the first Belgian Moto Tour (BMT) took place from 16-19 May in the region of the famous Spa-Francorchamps racetrack. The FIM-approved event brought together 85 riders from Belgium, France and Italy for a weekend of road rally riding, navigational tests and special stages. And after three days and almost 1,000 kilometres of riding, Lejeune won the event on his HP2 Megamoto by less than one second from second-placed Suzuki GSX-R rider Wilfried Tallone from France, with Honda CBR rider Jehan D’Orgeix finishing just 21 seconds later.

Supported by BMW Motorrad Belgium-Luxembourg, the Lejeune Motosport team was among the very first to register for the BMT – part of an international series that also has rounds planned in France and Italy later this year. The team then became one of the leading contenders and certainly hot favourites when it was discovered that head of BMW Motorrad Motorsport Berti Hauser had decided to lend three new BMW HP2 Megamotos to the Belgian trio.

The three riders consisted of brothers Eric and Fred Lejeune – both BMW Motorrad dealers and former BMW Boxer Cup competitors – as well as Didier de Radiguès, the former MotoGP rider. However, three became two after Eric Lejeune had a crash prior to the rally and was forced to take over the responsibilities of being team manager for his brother and Didier de Radiguès.

Among the top competitors in the ‘experts’ category (the BMT also included ‘Promotion’ and ‘Classic’ classes) were the winner and runner-up riders from last year’s Dark Dog Moto Tour – Denis Bouan (Buell) and Jehan d’Orgeix (Honda). The Belgian Supermoto specialists Thierry Godefroid (Kawasaki) and Fred Fiorentino (KTM) were also tipped as possible winners of this year’s BMT.

In fact, it was Fiorentino who finished the first day in the lead, with Fred Lejeune in third place in rainy conditions. His HP2 Megamoto gave great feedback on small, slippery tarmac roads as well as on the karting track of Francorchamps, where finishing behind specialist Firorentino gave Fred a lot of confidence for the following two days.

The race conditions were completely different on the second day, as the sun decided to shine on the competitors. Early leader Fiorentino made a mistake by arriving too early at the checkpoint, which effectively handed leadership of the BMT to Lejeune, who didn’t put a foot wrong all day.

The final day of competition was expected to be difficult for the BMW riders, but in fact they excelled on the HP2 Megagmotos and Lejeune and de Radiguès won two out the three special stages in front of big crowds. After experiencing some technical problems with his Kawasaki, supermoto specialist Thierry Godefroid was overtaken by the French Moto Tour specialists, Wilfried Tallone and Jehan D’Orgeix who started to put serious pressure on Lejeune for the lead.

The last stage took place on the fully renewed circuit of Spa-Francorchamps where the competitors had to ride two laps. Giving all he could, Lejeune was able to hold the lead by just 0.86 sec and won the first ever Belgian Moto Tour – and in doing so, giving the new HP2 Megamoto its first international race victory. Wilfried Tallone (Suzuki GSX-R) and Jehan D’Orgeix (Honda CBR) took the second and third places while Didier de Radiguès ended in a respectable 10th place. Frenchman Florent Parret came in 11th on his BMW HP2 and BMW Brussels-supported G 650 Xchallenge rider Vincent Paquet finished in 33rd place due to a navigation fault which cost him around 20 places in the final ranking.

Fred Lejeune was obviously very happy with his win: “It’s incredible to start a rally like this and then win it with a new bike. I’m particularly happy because the team had been badly affected by the accident that my brother Eric had but even so, it inspired me to really pull out all the stops and go for the victory. This result proves that our team and the new HP2 are performing well and my goal now is to try and win the international championship. In the meantime, the BMW HP2 Megamotos are on their way to the USA for the famous Pikes Peak’s race, which we’ll be following closely.”

Belgian Moto Tour results (‘Experts’ category)
1. Fred Lejeune (BEL), HP2 Megamoto – 23:33.68
2. Wilfried Tallone (FRA), Suzuki GSX-R – 23:34.54
3. Jehan D’Orgeix (FRA), Honda CBR – 23:55.67
