I have a new (<200 miles) HP2 Sport. After parking it on its side stand and leaving it for a few hours, I have been getting a fair bit of white/blueish smoke when starting again. Is this normal? It has happened on 3 occasions now.

Sounds pretty normal for the oilheads when they not run in properly yet. I used to sit on my HP2 about a minute until the oil drained properly from the heads before sticking it on the sidestand. Never had any problems. Also in the habit of sitting the bike up straight when I started it - small quirky things I like to do, some say it is weird others call it common sense
Thanks maverick. I've started placing the sidestand on a small block to keep it upright when parked in my garage and use the same for starting first thing. It seems to have cured the smoking on start I was experiencing. By the way, what a bike!

Hi Flashman, I have a 2010gsa which has started smoking on start up. I picked it up from the dealers after having a new fuel sender fitted. I mentioned when I took it in about the smoking, they had a look and say it still needs to be run in more? 1800 miles up to now.
I'm not sure I beleive this as I have a knowledge of 4 strokes and to smoke on start up after a day or two usually means valve guide seals or worse. If it doesn't improve soon it will be going back.
By the way mine is always left on the centre stand and is wheeled out of the garage and started on the centre stand. 5 or 6 blips of the throttle before it clears.
I have never really left mine on a side stand apart from quike stops at the cafe but last winter I left it in the front room for 4 monthes on its side stand and it wouldent start then frew lots of oil aut of the exaust what is stiill burnt in to the wooden floor it never done that the year before on a lift , so I guese dont leeve it on your side stand uther wisse the oil all runns to one chamber even thou it was cold when I put it in in 36000km no problems
Litelfun, thanks for the reply. Refreshing to know you've had no problems in 36 000 km. Mine hasn't "smoked" since my post on the subject. I do use the paddock stand though each time I put it to bed in my garage. It still makes me grin each time I ride it. What a fantastic bike!
