Just a reminder - to check the HPI before you buy.
Went to buy a bike that's up on this site earlier today - and it had outstanding finance on it.

Seller seemed as suprised as I was - but there it was on the HPI check in big red letters.

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Was a really nice GS too... What a pity - I was looking forward to hooning around on it over the weekend.

Finance outstanding is not a deal breaker.
Get a settlement figure from the finance company and you pay them direct, and then give the seller the balance.
Job done, unless he owes more than the bike is worth.

Yes HPI'ing is a good thing
Don't always belive it though? hell of a lot of mistake in the system

Confession time:augie before becoming a sparky I used to sell cars, I'm sorry oh the shame

Cheers Duncan

Not that easy, if the current owner bought it without knowing the the bike was trying to sell has o/s finance on it from the seller he bought it off

Ture - it's not a deal breaker.

But in this case, it was the person who bought it from new - the finance was outstanding from the registration date!

As the finance is the HP from new - it could be for nearly the whole value of the new bike! It could be a £50 debt ot a £10,000 debt - I don't know.

The bike has been sold twice since then too.

I'm still interested in the bike - and will happily pay the agreed price - but want to either understand the outstanding finance - so can pay it off, with the balance to the current seller - or have him sort it out.

Good thing I checked. Best £15 ever - it could well have saved me at least £3500. Shame I wasted the trip to go and see it.

Its worth checking with the finance company that there is still money outstanding, sometimes the finance company dont remove it from the data base after settlement..
If it hasnt been paid off the first owner must still be paying the loan back or the finance company would have come looking to reclaim the bike.
I would get intouch with the finance company for a settlement figure. How old is the bike?

Always worth doing the HPI.

My present car showed as having finance and nearly spoiled the deal. But a few calls to the named finance company showed that the records had just not been updated and i had the finace tag removed and all was ok.

For the benefit of anyone else who may be interested, can you post up a link to the bike in question.I can sort of guess the one,but it would be good to confirm it.
And no,i'm not interested in it myself.:)

That's exactly what my brother did when he bought his first Bandit years ago. IIRC the finance company were a bit sniffy about disclosing details to someone that wasn't their client, but it was all sorted amicably. :thumb2

kick in the nuts I would say :(

to say the least :tears
the bike will be owned by the finance company.
the finance might be more than the value payed.
the seller might be long gone.
many tears may fall. :eek
and just to add more shite.
without checking you might be buying an insurance right off.
[like what i did via this very site [ pegaso 650 ]
worth far less.

yes agreed, but in this case he has done the HPI check and is forwarned .
So it need not be problem, just a phonecall to the finance company should get to the bottom of it..

We bought a Cooper S off a dealer a few years back, supposedly finance free but, when we came to sell it again, it showed finance as owing.

There wasn't but it turned out that the finance company had not removed the 'flag' after the first owner sold it to the dealer.

Also the odd HPi shows an incorrect "write off" tag. Had one on a trade in once when I was with a dealer and that was a little tricky. HPI (I think?) had entered the bike details incorrectly!

Just another friendly reminder to encourage people to check. Have come
across two in the past few weeks - both advertised on the forum which
turned out to have finance owed and sellers only declared information
when asked, one of which after days of negotiation and was ready to
leave for the bank.

I know people say say "oh it's not a deal breaker, just send a cheque to
finance company and rest to seller" But both of these sellers wanted funds
in their OWN account first. Be Careful. :thumb2

If you have an Iphone there is a free app 'MyCarCheck' that will give you basic results for free, VERY useful when I was buying a van as a couple were advertised as 3.5 tons and turned out to be 2.8, when that includes the weight of the vehicle it's a problem!

You can then pay £2.99 for a history/finance check and another £2.99 for mileage if you wanted to go that far.

Also great when I got the Smart car, lots looked great but were Cat C/D written off and lots of insurance companies are not insuring them and if they do making reduced payouts if a claim is made.

Couple of years ago I went to buy a bike and when I was about to HPi it the seller got the ar$e "If that's your attitude, it's not for sale" I decided not to buy but check anyway.....guess what.....the full set :JB

Reported stolen recovered AND a cat C with outstanding finance! :censor:
