HSE New Paramedic Motorcycle

I was speaking to a HSE motorcycle Paramedic about a month ago and he told me that the HSE had purchased a number of Harley Davision motorcycle's to complement the fast responce unit..............

I'm not a bit suprised that the HSE so chose - all HSE decisions are committee decisions. It could have been worse - could have got a camel.
The committee incidentally would not have anyone who knew about motorcycles. I worked for the HES for years as a lab professional - committees would dedide all kinds of things that dont quiet add up.

Not having a pop at Harleys - fine yokes in their own realm but is "rapid" part of that realm???
A Deauville would have given low seat height, carrying capacity & a bit of "flickability" - would that committee need an outside "consultant"...............
Maybe they had one - Bogman own up. :D

it's not what you know....

now that has a familiar ring to it. :augie

I said, your kidding....

He said, I'm not.........:rob

Blackrock shopping centre on Saturday

and they picked a harley? better off with a scooter :D

looks like some one was watching too many CHiPs series on tv

I don't ride a Harley never rode one but I don't see anything wrong with them. I dint know how reliable they are but I have not heard a lot about them re problems or such. If Dublin Harley put in a good quote for the business they deserve it. We have all heard stories about certin dealers not wanting trade inns or giving poor prices for them. It's one of the reasons I ride a BMW not the best bike in the world but at least the dealers are approachable and look after you in a fashion. If the health board got a good deal and it's all above board fair play to them. I might trade in my rt for one or at least have an open mind about them. The forums are full of BMWs with problems are Harleys as bad(good)?I doubt it. 100s of police departments can't be wrong. JJH

I wonder how many of the people who have made negative comments have actually ridden a Harley?

I had never ridden one until last week, and guess what- I really enjoyed it.
I won't however be trading in the g/s.

all in good form. most people badger gs and harley riders. never take it to heard.

Took a ride over to H D Dublin today and I was seriously impressed. I'm probly not looking for one and they don't seem to have anything like a gs or rt on display and that's what i tend to go for (Fjr capponord GSA rt in the last 4 years) one he'll of a shop. There is a Triumph dealer beside the HD outfit and I had a blast on a new 800 xc it's a really nice bike and I enjoyed the blast but I found it a bit high reving at motorway speeds +. also I did not like the bars too straight for me easy to fix I know but there is a 1200 coming out later this year with shaft drive so I'll wait and see. Back to the 800 it's a peach of an engine. JJH oh and thanks for the coffee

It could be worse

Maybe horses were a better idea.. :nenau

Anyone watch the programme I think on Ch5 earlier in year about the English paramedics & police bikers? Not a bad show I thought. Not a Harley in sight, think they were all (or mostly) RT's

I've been watching that alright. Charlie Boorman does the vioce over for it, It's called Emergency Biker and is on Channel 109 Watch on Sky.

Very good. They also have Fire bikes that are also BMW RT's that can handle anthing up to the single car fire. :thumb2

The word is that they were never greased in the first place JJH former Fjr owner and member of fj owners club who recommend that the job be carried out on new Fjrs

........and here the are, all waiting to be greased up

There is going to be some urgency with the coming visits. What highly trained Guard wants to be stuck on a deauville? Nothing wrong with them mind but Fjr to deauville having had both I would not like to loose about 75 bhp over night. I have a rt at the moment but am tempted to go back to a Fjr. Will we see a purchase of motorcycles very soon? JJH

The advantage of a motorcycle for paramedic work isn't it's top speed. It's the ability to go where cars and full size ambulances can't.

Even without the "buy-back" agreement they'd probably still retain more of their value than other bikes come sell-off time?

:beerjug:

Depends what the buy back is. There is nothing wrong with Harleys for the job. I'd love to know what the figures are. obviously they are commercially sensitive but did every one get the chance to bid. Was it a open compitation or were Harley deemed to be the only suitable bike? I don't remember any ad. in any press from the Hse for the bikes. Who carried out the evulation? What other bikes were considered? will all this info be made public? Did someone just go out with a checkbook and buy them? Were the riders consulted? JJH

Under Gov regulations the HSE would have to have three quotes!!!:augie
But of course these are based on a specification put in by the HSE..........who had the skills to do that as the guys who ride the bikes would not have much of a say! The lowest quote is not supposed to be the only criteria but to date it is the only one I know they go by. Also the decision to get new bikes was probably at least 10 years ago based on other HSE schemes. Tallaght Hospital, 20 years on the plans........lifts too small for the trolleys to go the operating theatre. Campus housing to empty the psychiatric institutions 25 years out of date..........no one can change the plans and say stop even when the powers that be know that they are totally unsuitable. :blast
