Having read previous posts and researched the best I can I decided to take the plunge today. R1200GS 2009 pre twin cam, 34000 miles. I mainly wanted to sort the horrible fueling low down between 2000rpm and 3500rpm. The bike has original headers on that have had the cat removed. The bike originally had a small amount of clutch slip on the road around 6500rpm to 8000rpm so I was a little bit nervous as to how it would perform.

Anyway the results were at the rear wheel;

Standard Power 85.29bhp @ 7254rpm
Standard Torque 61.8ft/lb @ 7242rpm

Hilltop Power 97.3bhp @ 7452rpm
Hilltop Torque 78.23ft/lb @ 5174rpm

Fueling much much better low down, more useable Torque and bizarrely the clutch slip has disappeared and no matter how much I try and provoke it it won't slip. Maybe due to original power and Torque coming in all at once on the graph at precisely the point where it used to slip!?

Pleasantly surprised by the way it rides, no more hunting and coughing at low revs in 30 & 40 speed limits.

I found it transformed the way the bike rode but there will be some that will be negative in their thoughts.
 
This is interesting because I had previously understood that the big improvements from a HT remap were to be seen on TCs and LCs and that earlier bikes didn't improve so much, at least from a rideability point of view. Those figures are impressive enough but it's improved rideability that I'd be looking for, spending as much time riding in London as I do. Hmmm......
 
Definitely! Effortless, smooth and fuels so so much better. It should be like this out of the factory. It would be even better with proper decatted headers. 👍

There's no way I could've ridden mine in heavy traffic! It would be lurching and hunting everywhere. It was like it was running on air only! It's silky smooth now.

What a weird pre-mapped power delivery. 60bhp at 6.5k then a frenzy to give you another 25bhp in around 700 revs. No wonder the clutch gave way.

It is bizarre ! Maybe removing the cat from the original headers had some kind of adverse effect?! All I know now is it's fixed and runs beautifully. I might even consider some proper decatted headers.

Mine's not perfect but it's nowhere near that bad. I de-catted it with Remus headers. Sounds as if you had something wrong other than just needing a re-map, though. Do Hilltop do a throttle balance and the like before mapping the bike?

No nothing like that. Just turn up, he works his magic and 2hrs later away you go. He said the low end dip in Torque is due to the original headers rather than proper ones.

I noticed a lot more bottom and mid range when I fitted aftermarket headers. Even more with a posh system, but the real boost was sorting out the fuelling.

The standard fuel map cripples engine.

Fueling was the main reason I went. And I'm happy I did.

Mine has a Power Commander . It's an engineered bodge but hugely improved the standard fuelling map. A proper job with dyno lets you keep the O2 sensors and still have a better bike. You'll probably find that it feels like the handling improved as well as better engine performance. Smooth fuelling through (and out of) bends makes a big difference.
 
Well the handling feels better purely because it's not snatching on roundabouts, slow bends in fact all slow work that requires precision. ��
 
Mine's much sharper and quicker but the throttle response at low speeds is quite jerky, I've learned to live with it but it's probably worse than the the low speed fuelling on my KTM and I had to sort that out.
 
Mine was particularly bad below 30mph in 1st and 2nd. But now 90% better. I don't remember my 2005 and 2006 1200's been as bad to be honest. Unless the emissions have got stricter over that period. Overall I'm impressed. Mpg is better too despite me ringing its neck!! :augie
 
I went the AF XiED route but believe the improvements would be similar.
Could it be that your clutch slip was simply the traction control cutting in? Especially at those sort of rpm's.
I've had a similar thing when winding it on a semi dry road for an overtake. You may still get it in similar circumstances.
Unless it still does it in the dry, I wouldn't worry about the clutch.
 
Good point - My traction used to kick in much more easily before I changed the rear shock. I had no idea how bad it had become.
 
No definitely the clutch. It's back only really gunning it so it's booked in for new clutch. At least I'll have piece of mind that it's done.
