Why huggers?

Given all the issues with huggers (variable quality, price, limited effectiveness, difficulty with wheel removal, etc.), why are so many people still enamored with them?

Personally I just don't like all the crap, road salt and everything I pick up on my daily commute being sprayed into the rear shock, batter, and my legs.

Maybe its a hang over from living previously in Brighton and watching what salt air does to my previous bike ( Triumph Daytona 12 ). Practically ate the metal.

If there all alternatives am I all ears

If you want to put off-road tyres on your bike forget the hugger. Get something like below. I made my own but you can buy them as well.
