Hugger or Crud catcher

Due to debate about Touratech box and removal of crud catcher at rear, I am thinking of a hugger, points of vue for and against, and downfalls of hugger if any, cheap Chinese or expensive Puig etc.
 
I fitted one from M and P. Copy of the more expensive ones. I had a discount code for eBay at the time and it cost me about 35 quid or so.
It's absolutely fine, can't fault it. No reason to pay silly money for one in my view.

Hugger.
I've never liked the look of the crud catcher, or the fact you have to touch the engine bolts. But everyone will have their preference !

I’ve tried both and both together and ended up with just the Mudsling. For some reason the hugger (Puig) didn’t really make any difference in the amount of crap deposited on me and the bike. In fact, it actually directed more crap on the brake calliper. My problem with the hugger is the fixings. I don’t like the idea of replacing the paralever and brake calliper bolts with unknown quality.
 
I have both fitted. Ilimberger carbon fibre hugger and a machineart mudsling. I believe the ilimberger hugger to be better than the Puig version because it mounts on the cardan drive rather than the telelever strut pivot point. This means that The ilimberger hugger moves in a fixed arc with the cardan drive under suspension compression, rather than describing a different arc as with the Puig hugger. I have two mates with Puig huggers and mudslings fitted and this different arc caused the Puig hugger to push the bottom end of the mudsling into the rearward face of the swinging arm, gouging the surface.
Why both I hear you say? Well, the shovel thingy had to through sheer ugliness and conflict with the Touratech toolbox and the ilimberger hugger looks good but doesn’t extend far enough down at the front edge to provide protection for the swinging arm. The mudsling does extend down and protects this area.

Excellent information, yes Limberger look very good but the price, I think cheaper to throw away Touratech lol
 
Something I've found is a plate on the centre stand stops a LOT of crap. Not all, but a significant improvement.
 
I fitted a hugger to my 2005.
OK results but used brake caliper mounts - one bolt/spacer machined in plain old mild steel rusted in place in short order
Currently have a mudsling and number plate extender - v happy.
 
I have a mudsling, hugger and a home made extension under the number plate, bike doesn’t get too shitty so one or all of them must make a bit of difference!!

Yes hugger is looking good, I try to find a good ebay carbon if possible, fitting looks safer as member here says.

In the order of fitting;
1 Puig hugger. Didn't stop any dirt at all .
2 Puig infill panels. stopped the dirt going on me.
3 Mudling copy. Stops the dirt covering the shock.

Thanks I have mudsling type on bike good for shock, I am not worried about mud to much, it is the stones I do not want to throw at friends behind or cars on road, maybe I just remove Touratech box for long rides when loaded heavy and 2 up and use my paniers, and use Touratech for tools when alone.

You can't stop stones being thrown up, you would have to have a guard nearly touching the ground. It is not your problem.
 
That looks worse than the original one. It's a motorbike just ride the bloody thing. You are trying to fix a problem that doesn't exist.
 
I actually struggle to find a valid reason for getting a hugger/mudsling to be honest. I wash the bike after every major ride, making sure the suspension is nice and clean, and I wear a waterproof suit, so having rainwater thrown up by the wheels onto the legs is not an issue. I’ve never had so much dirt on the legs that I thought I had to get one.
