Hydro Blasting Engine Components

To bring the engine back t its original state, I opted to dismantle the engine to have it hydro blasted. it had a lot of oxidation especially on the cylinder heads and cylinder jugs. The oil pan was quite bad as well. I received some photos yesterday of the oil pan the fellow working on it was quite happy with the result. It’s going to turn out quite nice I think in the end. Glad I opted to go this route.

Glass bead in the oil ways etc will give your engine, or gearbox an extremely short life.

Best way to clean it is ultrasonic at a high temperature.

Hydro blasting, as far as I am concerned there are no glass beads but only water involved….Sir.

I’ve never heard it called hydro blasting,
But if it’s the same as what I would call aquablast or wet blast,then yes there is glass blast media used.
In any case,you would need to dry blast first then wet blast to achieve that finish.
You can wet/aquablast stuff like carb bodies but it won’t touch corroded alloy

Mikeyboy is correct, it’s a water glass bead slurry mix … basically glass blasting with with the addition of water.
Yes, some items may or may not be dry blasted first with more aggressive media first.

The finish on the oil pan I believe the media used is a 320 glass bead for the wet blasting. Different media will achieve different results of finish.

I have heard the process called hydro blasting, Vapor honing, Aquablast or wet blasting… the laser looks interesting. Dry ice blasting is another really cool process, again much cleaner than using an abrasive media.

If not done correctly its possible for the media in vapour bladting to get embedded in alloy castngs then be released as the alloy heats up. The slurry needs to hit the surface at an angle. I was suprised how much media i got out of a customers engine cases when i put them in my ultrasonic tank.

The components are going to be ultra sonic cleaned after blasting. The fellow doing it is experienced with motorcycle engines. Will post some photos once it’s back and keep you updated.
