I buy from China for work and have been out there working with our suppliers.

Quality can be good, you're right. In fact in my area of work it can be much better than many western competitors.

The cheap stuff is cheap compared to western produced equivalents for a reason and you don't have to be well informed to understand why.

If you're happy supporting shite working and living conditions. Shite environmental standards etc etc etc then knock yourself out but don't plead ignorance of any of that shite, it's not rocket science.

I am happy supporting shite working and living conditions.... my own. Now I've paid £2,500 for Ohlins and Hyperpro's mortgages I can't afford to feed the missus. :D

But am I happy, hell yeah.

I feel exploited.... :D

I've paid mate, I'm looking forward to setting it all up.

What I'm saying is how surprised I was for a Chinese item with the same form factor at more than 10x cheaper.

£18 delivered is CHEAP

Very poor logic, just because it looks the same on the outside, it doesn't show any indication of the quality of the components.

Not sure how we've got onto working conditions, but all Id say there is, when was the last time you went?.. I've been going to China for over 20 years now and agree in the early days things were not the best. But now its changing fast. I deal a lot around Shanghai and the houses / apartments they live in are very nice indeeed. And when you look at working conditions...a lot of the factories are much better than you see in the UK! One of the girls I work with at a PCB place in Ningbo looks after a small ine and hit targetts before Christmas.. they rewarded her with a car!.. when did you last see that in the UK.

most if not all of the suppliers I use are ISO14001(not bought down the market) which is more than I can say for our UK suppliers who can't be bothered to do it....

So on all fronts, I do not agree with your comments... get youself out there again and get up to date.... or at least deal with the right suppliers.. from your comments is sounds like you are buying crap from China? ;)

I think you should read my post again. I have no issue with Chinese products per se.........

I made a point of saying that quality can be as good as (and in my area often better) that what I could buy at home/in the EU. Prices are also comparable so I'm nut buying from there because of the unit costs, you pay for what you get anywhere in the world.

You're not sure how we got onto working conditions? Really? Why are some products out of China so cheap? That's how we got onto working conditions.

When I was last out there 18 months ago (Guangzhou) there were still plenty of sweat shop manufactures (not, I hasten to add the guys I deal with directly) so I'm not sure why you're saying that's no longer the case out there. Yes things have moved one and are continuing to do so but still a large part of their manufacturing economy is based on no NPD costs, no IP issues, cheap disposable labour and poor environmental standards.

Why then do you think they can make and deliver a damper for £18 and Hyperpro charge £255 (well, apart from it being complete shite)?

I'm generally with the "no free lunch" gang.

Even if lot of respected brands get their stuff made in China (and with good quality), there is also another side to it.

As for the £18 vs £255 dampers, judging from the pictures, they look the same.

Part of HyperPro cost is development cost, and in small batches, this makes up a good part of the cost. But what do we know about the aluminum quality, the treatment of the materials (smooth surfaces) and the surface treatment (how it handles wear and tear)?


I have never tried China dampers, so on my part, it boils down to the following: If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Our main machine shop in Wuxi would turn them out for that price no problem.. and they maintain good standards. Yes, obviously there are sweat shops as there are in the UK. But China is interesting in that you have to buy at the right level for what you want. I guess in the UK we assume everyone is trying to be the best they can, where as there, they appear quite happy having a spectum of standards and quality.

Most of my UK suppliers are 14001.. but some just can't be bothered.. all I'm saying is that envoromental issues are not just a problem in China ;)

Bought the HP version two weeks ago and after 600 glorious miles it went in for the first service this morning. Three hours later I had to leave on an R800 due to front calliper leakage which deemed the bike unsafe to drive. No parts currently available in the Uk so they don’t know how long it will take.
At the same time another guy, David, in for his first service walks out with exactly the same problem. NO JOKE!

so much for the development costs LOL
