I appear to be missing maps

My 660 appears to have CN Europe 2014 in full on it , in fact when I zoom in it seems to be there to street level
My basecamp keeps telling me that there are no detailed maps available.

I have been on the phone to Garmin for a total of 3 hours this week, and I now think that the detailed maps have been deleted ( accidentally by me I think )

Still waiting for a response from Garmin support having sent yet another email....

Anyone know if the maps on the 660 can be sent the other way and re-installed on the computer? I've looked and there doesn't appear to be

One thing I am trying to avoid is having to fork out £75 for new maps when I had them already , and also have paid for lifetime updates

im guessing here but i believe the device needs to be connected to the pc for you to access the maps in basecamp

Not so- provided you have downloaded the maps to your PC

You only need to connect the 660 to download your routes or waypoints so in that case only connect it for that process.

Yes, it would appear that you have the 2014.10 maps on your device, but not in Basecamp. The work around is to plug in your device every time you use Basecamp. Then, go to the "Maps" drop-down menu at the top of the screen and make sure the 2014.10 maps are ticked.

Less hassle in the long run would be to download the 2014.10 maps to your computer so that they are in Basecamp (and then you willnot have to plug in your device until you want to transfer a route from Basecamp to the device.

To get the maps on your computer/Basecamp, I think this is what you have to do:
Either
a) ring garmin Support and get them to talk you through it
or
b) Connect your device to the computer. Ignore Garmin Express. Fire up either Garmin Map Updater or Garmin Map Installer (you might have to try both) and download the maps to the computer. If the software only offers you 2013.40 don't worry. Download those maps to your computer. That way you at least get some relatively up to date maps on your computer. THEN, fire up one of the 3 pieces of Garmin software and hopefully one of them will offer you the 2014.10 update. I believe that to get the 2014.10 update, you have to have one of the previous versions already loaded (at least that was the case when I lost all the maps from a Nuvi device!).

If using Garmin Express for the update, it does not show/offer the option to download to you computer straight off. You have to select the option to download selected areas (about 3 screens in I seem to remember). Then, at the bottom of the drop down menu where you can select which areas you want to download, right at the bottom you will see an option to download to the computer. If you click that (and only that) option, you will get the whole of Europe downloaded to your computer.

A word of warning: the downloads take ages (typically anything from 90 mins to 4 hours or more!!). Make sure any 'energy saving' settings are turned off on your computer as you do not want it going to sleep in the middle of a download. The computer needs to be up and running the whole time.

Just remember that swearing (either under your breath or out loud) is all part of the experience. Lots of deep breaths and no alcohol to muddle the brain.

And just remember that you have the maps on the Zumo so, if all else fails, you can always use Basecamp by plugging in the Zumo

Right then.. Just had a look at it....

When I plug in the 660 to the mac and boot up map installer I get the message 'no unlocked maps were found for this device'

Map manager ' no compatable maps'

Lifetime updater 'your maps are up to date'

On Basecamp there is a box at the top with 'my garmin devices'

Zumo 660 highlighted and the map has no detail east of France

Same if I highlight any other option

If I actually play with the unit itself i seem to have the maps , but not when its plugged in to the mac

Well , 4 or 5 hours later and I suddenly thought of a way to get the maps back..... I had a look in the Garmin box and lo and behold, a 2010 map install disc....

So I bunged that in, and afterwards got the codes to unlock the maps as per the instructions....

I then did a map update using the lifetime map updater .....

After much angst I used map install to send a corridor of maps to the 660, and they appear to be in order.

The only puzzling thing is that the maps only seem to be on the mac on Road Trip, not basecamp

I got a route from Ypres to Stuttgart and it all appears to have transferred over to the 660... so although I still am not sure everything is well at least I'm moving in the right direction.

I'm assuming I need to do any route planning on Road Trip ....

Why does it all seem so difficult

Dare I ask? What is Road Trip? Is it Garmin, as I thought that the only route planning software for your computer is/was Mapsource and Basecamp (with Basecamp superceding Mapsource).

But, as you say, at least you are making some headway and the first step was getting any maps on your device/computer. Because then you have the option to update.

So, your post is not that clear: have you now got maps on the computer? As well as your Zumo? And, you have succesfully transferred some routes from computer to Zumo.

But I do share your feelings: why is it all so difficult? And I always have a feeling that it may be something that I may be doing and that I am a complete numpty.

Paul, Road Trip is indeed a garmin programme.... had it on the computer for some time....I think it was the pre-cursor to basecamp... it allows you to plan routes and then transfer to unit.... it is in fact very similar to basecamp....

I now seem to have the maps on the unit and the computer... although I am still having difficulty sending some of the routes I have planned on the mac to the unit... had enough now as I've been on it since about 1pm....

I am so glad I use opensteetmaps having read this and other threads on the subject of downloading or updating from Garmin. My Europe map took all of 15 mins to be downloaded. works in Basecamp or Mapsource without problems.

You need to download garmin map installer and you will get the option to download to PC, Satnav or PC and satnav. Do it directly from your login on the garmin website.

Still need the unit to be plugged in.

Good idea, but following Pablo's thread I took out the memory card , started garmin express, selected re-install maps and then got the message 'you have no maps to re-install'

I think another call to garmin is coming tomorrow

if you take out the sd card, express will detect not enough space, take the option to just install selected areas, once in that screen you select whole of europe and using the drop down menu at bottom of page select install to pc only.
n.b. keep garmin connected until install is complete.
