I left this thread till today to read it. Quite interesting indeed. Original gser has some very valid points. I, as a 5year gser will probably considered by some as a relative newcomer to the gs scene,35 years biking though, whilst I look upon newer converts, especially since the lwr programme, to be jumping on the bandwagon. Cant help it, its just wot my wee brain tells me to think.
Unfortunately this opinion is unavoidable when there is a strong social element involved around a particular pastime and it gets too big to be cosy.

Whilst we all fall into the trap of wearing clothing and fitting accessories which are praised and endorsed by fellow members, some are "more enthusiastic" than others and tend to make a mockery of what is supposed to be an individualistic and somewhat rebelious mode of transport. Outsiders might think we look kinda funny when a group of fully loaded gsers go past on their 50 mile ride out, with enough gear on to go twice round the world. Fortunately there is enough of us who do use the bikes for their intended purpose to validate the image. And yes, I consider myself to be in the lower end of this group.
The problem for me, and presumably, Mr original gs, is when you do see a brand new shiny gs with all the trappings, with the rider decked out in all the matching bmw gear on, right down to the gs gloves and shiney plastic boots, it does sometimes smack of "lifestyle choice"..... doesnt it ? 6 months down the line, some will maybe move on to golf, some will stay. Some will always have been here, but have upgraded.

As for forums. This is a tricky one to comment on without offending some folk.
Ask yourself, if someone gave you this choice. Its either the forum or the bike. Some of you would choose the forum. You would!, dont kid yourself. You know who you are.
Im sure there is a sizeable amount of members for whom this forum is their chief means of social intercourse. Many of you have not had so many "friends" since before the children came along. ( not me, ive always been popular). A lot of you dont have a GS, or indeed any other form of bike. Nowt wrong with that, just a little bizzare. Tell me why someone?
A lot of "real gsers", who go to far flung places and in all sort of weather, real bikers, spend an awful lot of their spare time glued to the screen, waiting for someone to say something. For me its like having someone visit the house to have a chat about bikes and things, but you dont have to give them biscuits and coffee. Nowt wrong with that either.

I think Mr original gser is a bit like most of us. Protective of what he feels is his domain and resents people joining it and diluting his wee bit of individualism. Or maybe he is just trying to stir things up a bit, which he has, judging by the knee jerk defensive insults which were hurled at him. Shame on you all, I thought that we were better than that.

Finally, can ANY biker resist looking at their reflection in the shop windows .... of course you cant .... and yer a liar if you say you dont !!

Does any of that make any sense ?

How irritatingly insightful :P .

I say, you there, how damnably accurate!!! Guilty of several, except the BMW gear: I'm not made of money, you know. And haven't yet managed the far flung places....yet... :D

Den

Like someone else posted recently most of the (sometimes highly amusing...) banter on here is just a piss take and not to be taken too seriously. After all - we are only guys (and girls...) sitting at our computers.

As a relatively new member and GS owner I can honsetly say that although the forums can be informative and great fun to read/join in with - the most enjoyable aspect of finding this site has been the opportunity to meet like- minded people at the meets and rideouts.

In other words, to get the best out of this site you really must get out n about with fellow tossers...

:)

Funnily enough I must be the architypal GSer:

I am ugly
I ride a bike because it suits me, it is relatively cheap, its fast and I don't have to wait in line like all the boring twats in their cars
I chose the bike as my company car
I tend to ride long distances per ride (ave 500 mile days) but not too regularly (twice per month, more in summer)
I ride all year round
I avoid riding in very bad weather - I may be crazy but I'm not stupid
I ride despite dispproval from those I respect/love most
I am a Biker not a motorcyclist
I buy what fits me (a REALLY tough job) not what looks good (nothing really does except the dark visor)
I buy add ons that I hope will work and look good ( so something does)
I do not really give 2 shits about what anyone else thinks about it

HOWEVER. I find this forum amusing and rather informative and I've got to know some decent folk and even met 1 of them.

I do not have a GS. I used to but changed to an 1150 RT cos I thought it'd be better. I still follow this forum as I may just get a 1200GS and this is the best place to get some honest info on them.

If OriginalGSer is a little peeved at that then , really I don't care!

As for anything else, as the great Bender says "you can just bite my shiny metal ass"

Just for the record, my riding gear list's

Hein Gericke boots.
Frank Thomas leather jeans.
Dainese body armour.
Fox Enduro jacket.
Axo Motocross Helmet.
Oakley Goggles.

Sorry to bust your stereotypical myth Original GSer.

Ooops, no wait a minute, I do own a GS adventure, but I did'nt buy it because Ewan had one, honest.

Oh bollocks, let the secret out now.

And just for the record here's my riding gear list

arai tour X

hein gericke Tuareg jacket, trousers and gloves

Sidi courier boots

Gs 1150 with TT panniers etc

Only thing is, all my gear pre dates the LWR by a few years. I reckon Ewan should blame me  :dabone

hey folks, i may only be a vfr pilot at the min but i have every intention of joining the GS ranks in due course. EM can't be credited with my decision, instead look closer to home. A family friend and his bro (both long time BM owners) ride and swear by them. Having accompanied them on several ride outs i can think of no other bike that will (when ridden properly) give a sports bike a run for it's money on the twisties and still let you do 500 mile a day without feeling like you've slept on a rock face while being battered by raging rhinos. And a 200 mile tank to boot. Hey there's even scope for enough luggage to keep the missus in clean clothes for a 2 week scoot. But then maybe i put a bit of thought into that.
That said anyone in the south/hants area know of any up and coming meets other than those posted where a lonely vfr rider might be welcome?

I am a former VFR owner/rider as well. If you look in the South East meets section you will find a Reading meet comming up shortly. :thumb

I blame Ewan he certainly got me interested!
When I first came across this site, I found it very informative, however I cannot believe the childish abuse that some members lower themselves to. If this was a school forum then fair enough but I was under the impression from a previous poll that the age ranged from 20-50+????????

Personally I'm aiming for my Peter Pan suit as I never want to grow up but try thinking of some of the 'humour' on the forum as a reaction against the stereotypical image of a BM rider.

And breathe..... ;)

Sorry chaps but this spugular has it all wrong, it's not ewans fault, regress a little further and you will find that KTM dropped the biggest BO**OCK

Being one of those plonkers that owns a nice red GS, I'm now crying because it seems I've bought all the wrong kit, Had the best run down the yorkshire TT raod on sunday, put a long lasting smile on my face, thats what it's all about.

Want it have it, I now hold my wifes hand while were out, if I let go she shops!!

:mmmm That's just the body not the mind.

Thanks Den,
Just the kind of spirited debate this forum DESPARATELY needs. One thing you point out that is quite frightening is that some of these plonkers don't even have a bike.
Still can't get my head round the fact that they're willing to hack into ones PC just because they couldn't get their small brains round the fact that different people have different opinions. And if nothing else, it's shown everyone in their true colours.
The concept of a forum is excellent especially when it work well with cool people. unfortunately this forum is 90% twats. Oh well onwards and upwards.

Thank doG this site can make me laugh even on the rainiest of days.

Humour Superiour :thumb PB
If you knew the whole story the rainiest day would be even wetter as you’d be wetting your pants.

I don’t think Captain paranoia has quite grasped what this place is all about ;)
