I fecking give up! I've been 'Acquiring Network Address' all afternoon!

Greg...using your normal, wired PC, open up a browser window, then type in the following
192.168.1.1
Does that take you into the router's setup page?

If it does, you're now in the router setup pages...the default username AND password on that router is 'admin' (without the quotes:augie) so enter that , then you're in.

Now it's a matter of delving around to find the relevant part to add a device and authorize it to allow the laptop full internet access.

How far ya got so far?

I'm betting its something to do with the card not being able to support WPA properly.

Have a look for driver updates or down grade the router to WEP?

or run a cable ;) my fav :D

Greg,

I struggled for hours to get a 1 year old laptop to connect wirelessly, even though it worked perfectly when hard wired. In the end I got it working with WEP and not WPA.

The WLAN card offers options of WPA and WEP and I've tried every combination of every option (and matched same on the router) - the only combo that works is 'no security'

The WLAN card's driver wasn't the latest, but I have now installed the latest Broadcom driver for the device. It made no difference!

:(

Given that the unit is only 8 days old, I rang Acer's warranty line today.

I was firmly but politely told to feck off because it's a software issue that isn't covered by their warranty!

Yer what??!

They may come to regret that. I then rang the buyer from Costco and told them the tale. They were as unimpressed as I was.

The good news is that Costco offer full IT support. I'll be ringing their support serviced (based in the US, but on a UK 0800 number :thumb) later this evening.

Greg

did you try to cut and paste the key into the dialog box, rather than typing it in

(cut and paste it from the browser)

This is a known problem (conflict) between router and card on many different devices when using WPA/WEP. I've encountered it several times on different installs and sometimes resort to setting WEP off and MAC address validation on.

Good thought Andrew but I tried that last night too. It still didn't connect.

Edit - I didn't have WEP off but was selecting the specific MAC addressed PC

WEP and WAP off and MAC filtering on, that should solve the "acquiring address" conflict. Always has for me. :thumb2

Edit: yes it's wep that has the compatibility issue.
