I feel like a bomb disposal officer - Red or Brown?

Please no double-entendres!!

I've got a Starcom1 and an 1150GS - but I'm a complete numpty!
I think the bikes got an auxillary socket near to where my left leg would be. It has a brown wire and a Red wire coming out of it. I think this is suitable for plugging in the Starcom to BUT....

1) Is it the right 'supply' to do it with (switched/Not switched)?
2) Which ones positive and which ones negative?
3) If I tap into the wrong one will it all blow up!

I look forward to receiving some wisdom in the matter!!!

The socket should be live all the time....use a tester to prove this.

The socket centre contact should be Positive....use a tester to prove this.

The socket outer contact should be Negative...use a tester to prove this.


The Red wire should be Positive.....the Brown wire should be Negative.

Again,use a tester to prove the above...or look to see where the wires are connected.

In your appliance power lead,if both cores are black but one has a white 'trace line' on it,then that is Positive......this is standard practice.


The Intercoms that I`ve wired up for people have required a switched feed,so the socket wouldn`t be suitable in those applications.


Connecting up with a reverse polarity doesn`t always cause a 'fry up' ( ) as many electronic gizmos have internal short circuit protection,but they don`t all have this,so do the checks first.

And RTFM as regards installation requirements.
