I give in ....

...get one of the last TC and stop cleaning it

A sensible post, I used to use my 1150 to commute all year round. It wasn't worth cleaning it for 6mths of the year because it would be filthy the very next time I used it. I just sprayed it with FS365 twice a week and the build up of that and the crap that stuck to it seemed to "protect' the engine . That and some ACF 50 on vulnerable parts seem to do the trick. :thumb

I don't need telling, I have an 1150 too, with 81000 miles on it and I love it to bits ..... ☺️

I think the only way to stop these corroding is to spray clear lacquer on a new engine assy, bit of a ball ache but my October 14 plate (just over 3 years old now) is starting to show signs, amazed its not the engine but the rear arm around the telelever seals..

This begins my question.. what's gonna be the resale value of these bikes as I wouldn't buy one with corrosion on the components.
I think the dealers are gonna have a problem looming.

There's plenty of second hand ones in the dealers with these paint issues, they seem blind to it when it comes to pricing .......
As for a Private sale or if you were buying one yourself knowing of these issues however is a different matter.

I had this issue way back on my 2002 1150. The answer was to buy a Triumph :P

One word....Honda, you know it makes sense.

I'd have given up on BMW as soon as they'd replaced the first engine after 18k!!!! No point giving anything or anyone a second chance these days, if the product is that shit it'll always be that shit, and you'll spend the rest of your ownership constantly watching and waiting for it to rot away, get rid and move on, or get one of the last TC's.

This used to be my standard response whenever build quality conversations started... buy HONDA!
That was until I spent some time speaking to our local All-Year Biker chap, as a devoted 600cc/1000cc sportsbike fan he's had most models of CBR and he is of the opinion that from his own, and from those he spends each and every day cleaning (very well indeed too as you ask :-) ), that across the board, build quality is shocking nowadays, be it the water-based paint, the cost cutting and the mass production nature of capitalism (!) or the fact that we're riding more (and year round) and critically, expect more and are more prone to complaining (because the price of new bikes nowadays is extortionate!). The result appears to be the same - "they all do this guvnor! :-(
