Hello all,

I see many peoples complaining about braking systems, but totay I can say I was really happy with mine!

this afternoon,I was driving on a forest trail,on a small mountain ,near my place, and usually there is nobody in that forest,so I did not pay much attention, and I was on the middle of that narrow road,at low speed, maybe 30/40 KM/h ,when suddently,in a corner,at the worst place of course(wet +gravel) a car 4X4 just front of me  in a flash I squezze the handle brake, much much too srong, and locked both wheels! I can still feel the ABS releasing the brakes twice, and also I heard the gravel scrr scrr!!,but I could stop, the car stoped too,we where close at 20 cm!!!

As a idiot, this happend to me already , in similar conditions(low speed, surprised by a car) 15 years ago, when I was driving a Kawasaki ZZR 1100, I loked the front wheel, and I was laying in front of the car,the bike had for 2000 euros broken parts!

I dont have crash bars on my GS,and I know that if I droped the bike ,even at low speed,It would coast me more thant the ABS option.Today I got a total refound of the ABS, + I avoid any injuries :thumb So I will never, ever, buy a bike whithout ABS. Today's moderns bike have such powerfull brakes, that it is verry easy to lock the wheel at low speed, when You dont expect to brake, acting by "reflex".

I know some guys are good enough to not be surprised at anytime, but it's not my case,so again,I love ABS,I love ABS,thanks ABS :P

Glad it worked out Ok, and you have something positive to say! I read the title and thought "here we go..."
Nice one mate.

Why hadn't you turned the ABS off beforehand if you were offroading ???

Hi Pukmeister,

Well, the trail where I was riding is not a real off-road track, but a paved road acces for foresteries duties, with sometimes good conditions for a part, and sometimes less good, whith mud, gravel, holes, etc. but anyway not bad enough for disconnecting the ABS fonction. And like I said in my post,if I had not the ABS,I would probably loked the wheel and fall off. Thats why ;) So once again,I am glad I had it...

An emergency stop on a bend is my biggest biking nightmare. I hope my ABS works as good as yours if I'm in the same position. :eek

In the UK ABS is £750.

My arguement is, if you dump it once without ABS....where's the economy?

I leave it switched on, off-road too - It's smarter than me.....

Chris, for your own safety, turn ABS off if you are off-roading on loose surfaces......

If you needed to quickly stop for example coming downhill on a gravel road, grass surface etc your ABS would interrupt your braking every time your wheels locked up on the unpaved surface, and you would end up in the bushes or worse. By manually switching off the ABS you can brake gently and control the bike over the loose surface, or use the rear brake and skid turn and other fun stuff worth practicing. :D

I attended "the great Steptoe rideout" on Salisbury plain last summer and we were all advised to turn the ABS off on arrival at the plain by more experienced riders. I wondered why until the above was explained to me by the good Mr Steptoe (cheers Neil). :thumb

To manually override ABS, stop the bike and switch off the ignition then press and hold down the ABS button and remake the ignition switch. Allow the bike to complete brake diagnostic self-test then release the ABS button and restart the engine. The ABS light will constantly flash to remind you it is switched off, but servo brakes remain available.
