An experiment?

Since busting my knee trials riding last summer, and turning 70 last month, I sometimes get the feeling that my 1250GS is getting taller and heavier, one-up is fine, but two-up with full luggage and pillion on bumpy ground she’s a big girl.

Anyway…..So, I thought I’d see if I could change my luggage to lighten the bike?

Fortunately I have a full set of both Vario’s and alloys, but I’ve never used the alloys.

I rigged a suitcase luggage scale up from my garage ceiling and set about weighing the two complete sets.

With the alloys I included all of the OEM scaffolding including the GSA footage brackets.

With the Vario’s I included a spare passenger grab rail with the black plastic insert, and the vario foot peg brackets.

The result surprised me?

What do you reckon??? :nenau

I’ll be back later with the answer..:thumb2

I have no idea of what the weight of all that gubbins is because my head is in a state of abject apoplexy due to the cleanliness of your garage floor.

Thanks Hann, you’re compliments are making me blush, thank you.

Actually the missus and I applied the coating about a week ago, it’s a 2-pack epoxy resin. You pour a small can into a big can, stir it very well and then you have 30 minutes to cut it in around the edges and roll it out. You have to be snappy, no stopping for a cuppa, but we’ll worth doing, it’s a very tough finish, petrol doesn’t hurt it, nothing does. yellow is the colour.

Coming back to the luggage, which would you think is the lighter?

Well CPJS, that’s just what I thought, and that is how I’ve ended up with two sets of alloy panniers and fittings but stranger than strange, the bloody plastic Vario’s are indeed the lighter luggage
Total weight of Vario’s with kit 20.90 kilos
Total weight of alloys with kit 23.2 kilos

I was a bit more than surprised, cos often the Vario’s feel heavier than the luggage bags I’m putting into them.

So this is it…. A full alloy kit is just over 2 pints of beer heavier than the Vario’s

I’ll have two sets of bmw alloys on the sale in the next few days, and a full set of as new scaffolding and foot peg hangers to fit them.

I need to weigh my Touratech mundos, Ive always thought they were lighter than my varios but now I'm not so sure.

As an aside the Vario topbox, which holds 35l weighs a tad under 7kg
The Givi Outback Trekker which holds 58l weighs…………..a tad under 7kg.

Interesting, the Vario’s are a double skin how about the Givi’s

I don’t want anything that holds any more or she will fill it with stuff :D

Have had givi’s plastic ones on previous bikes but I prefer these alloy ones ,I think the top loading is a better design

Now that really does surprise me as those varios always felt heavy without anything in.

Of course you could always leave the frame and try soft luggage :D I did.

The factory top box on my Triumph Sprint GT was 11.3 kg

Just lifting it onto the rack was a struggle.
