I have found the answer to the question?

Well CPJS, that’s just what I thought, and that is how I’ve ended up with two sets of alloy panniers and fittings but stranger than strange, the bloody plastic Vario’s are indeed the lighter luggage
Total weight of Vario’s with kit 20.90 kilos
Total weight of alloys with kit 23.2 kilos

I was a bit more than surprised, cos often the Vario’s feel heavier than the luggage bags I’m putting into them.

So this is it…. A full alloy kit is just over 2 pints of beer heavier than the Vario’s

I’ll have two sets of bmw alloys on the sale in the next few days, and a full set of as new scaffolding and foot peg hangers to fit them.

I have always thought the same

If I have acquired a bike with alloy luggage-I have sold the luggage soon after

Although not the same bike, as yours (1150 GS Adv in my case) I use the black BMW system cases as they are very light and robust, plus water proof and are smoother in the airflow

She’s pretty good actually, makes sure that the BMW inner bags will fit into the panniers at their smallest width (not expanded) better for filtering.

Soft luggage is even lighter again. 70 litres of kevlar laminated panniers for 4.5kgs..... and for the price of one hard pannier. Plus, if you do have an accident the soft panniers cushion the fall, rather than transfer the energy to the frame. Plus you can chuck them on any bike ever. :thumby:

I must admit that I was shocked, I’d bought the alloys to get the weight down over the Vario’s hence I thought I’d try and use some science before I swopped everything over.

I notice the weight of the varios on the bike. Far better imho is a top box with a roll bag on the passenger seat if no pillion.

i have some givi plastic panniers about 15 years old for a different bike. Very light...

These were the weights, and if your wondering what a frame bungle is, I don’t know either I told my missus frame bundle she held the pen and paper.:thumb2

Alloy + AGM battery = 30kgs

Vario + AGM battery = 27kgs

Bumot extremada 2x 4kgs + Frame bungle 2 kgs +Lithium battery 1kg total weigh for all = 11kgs

If I can lose a stone of pie-induced midriff, then that's over 6kg weight saving. I really should start there.

give her a weight limit .

:jes

Give her a weight limit?!??!
With the girls, it is what else can I squish in that pigeon hole….

They not like us, pack, then pull it all apart and establish what is a requirement and what is a luxury. Filter out the latter and pack again.
