I don't see the sense in this. I have been watching 4 items on ebay over the last couple of days. Each item is a pair of BMW Vario panniers for the 1200GS. All but one has finished now and the winning bidders have paid between £365 and £396.
My local dealer, Rainbow in Rotherham say the list price is £448 for which you get a 2 year guarantee and the locks made so that only the ignition key will open them.

Do buyers have little sense of the worth of second hand goods or is it me that is behind the times here. I was going to put in a bid around the £250 mark tops.

Ebay, excellent place to sell, not quite so good for buying. I often wonder why some stuff gets such a high price on ebay, there are some people who don't live anywhere near a dealer and prefer to buy from someone with 100% positive feedback on ebay, strange but true.

What I'd like to better understand is the fact that stuff I'm trying to buy often ends up selling for far above what I think its worth...........but stuff I've sold goes for less than its worth.:blast

Seems to me there are too many tossers chasing the "bling" on Ebay, often it get close to or even over its new price. I have been looking for some engine bars for my 1200gs for example, but I would rather buy new than pay someone £10 less for secondhand. :(
On the flip side though with bigger items, like bikes and cars, you can save thousands compared with dealer prices. :thumb

Adventure beaks seem to make the most profit. Mine of under £20 from the dealer - but they seem to go for double that on e-bay.

Two well used phrases spring to mind.
1. A fool and his money are soon parted and
2. There is one born every minute.
Both of these apply to the countless idiots who get carried away with ebay and keep bidding because they must have the item and cannot walk away. It is crazy what some people will pay. I too was looking at the vario's and too thought that £250 was my top end for a second hand set that were often dented, scratched and covered in stickers.. and you need to get the locks sorted on top of that...and pay a shed load of postage!
I soon learnt to consider how much I want something, bid my max and then walk away. If you get it great, if not, so what. Another one will be along very soon. You can now use Goofbay which is a web site bidding system which bids for you up to your max in the last seconds of the auction if you really believe that the last minute is the time to go for it.
As for my panniers, I ended up buying a nice new set of Buffalo sports panniers for £55 which throw over a treat and carry everything I need. I really cant come to terms with half a grand for two plastic alloy wrap boxes, nice as they look.:mmmm

Shark feeding frenzy comes to mind also. Some people appear to think that ebay is the bargain bin for everything and as already mentioned they haven't done any research in to actual cost price or alternative sources.

Yesterday I started to bid on a 'anti-glare headlight screen', I pulled out when it went above £27, it sold for £30 + pp, .
For new TT sell the for £34, with warranty, so I am going for that option.

Same with Givi and other plastic boxes. Advertised "few scratches", "one key only" etc. etc. and sell for 20 quid less than a new one. Strange.

It's happening now. Second hand panniers for a GSA1200 topping £500 in bids

E-Bay is a strange place.

Worst of all is 2nd hand helmets being sold for 80% of new price and with a very "unknown" past !

I'm in the market for a Zumo 550 and found someone selling them new on fleabay for £529. The cheapest you can get them on fleabay is £420. I can buy brand spanking new from a proper online shop for £399! Who the hell buys these things?

I agree with all of the above,i think ebay is a wierd place when your buying, much better if your selling.I do buy stuff now and again iv just bought my 710 ccm dualsport but i tend to bid for a while then email and see if the buyer has a buy now price, because in my experience the price goes mad as the auction nears the end and if the sellers a bit jittery he often takes your dosh. Its not really in the spirit of ebay but its got stupid, like you guys say, how the price of these items goes often as high as the new item..:Motomartin
