I know it's too soon for that....but

The story goes that at one time the two bikes were going to be released as the F800GS and the F800GS Dakar, as natural successors to the F650GS and the F650GS Dakar. As Wizard and Twisticles have so eloquently explained, the Dakar is effectively the 'adventurised' version, though I'm not sure I'd agree that tubed tyres are an advantage.

But then (so the story goes), BMW marketing decided they didn't want to lose the beloved F650 moniker, so the two bikes were renamed.

I don't know if this is true.
