Went for a test ride today on a virtually brand new GS te, very impressed with the engine, chassis but christ where does all that noise come from?
Not sure if it's induction roar or just mechanical noise coupled with wind roar. Didn't have earplugs in which I normally use.
I definitely couldn't bear that racket for the long trips I used to do, perhaps no earplugs was a big mistake!
In my time I've ridden over a million miles on all sorts of bikes, as exhilarating as today's ride was it was very far from relaxing and actually not too enjoyable, unless I kept the speed down!
Actually I'm not that old, lol.
 
It's all three, ear plugs smooooth things out nicely, I hate riding without them these days.
There is a price to pay for all the extra oooomph :)

I've ridden sports bikes at speeds over 180mph, honestly the gs was as noisy at 100, guessing earplugs could make a vital difference!
I think I've learnt a lesson today.

I will be doing long days in the saddle on the way to Italy next week and I would never contemplate doing it on any of the 1200 generation bikes without ear plugs - the LC does seem to have a lot of mechanical noise compared to say the 1150 which has a lot softer sound, but much softer power and torque too.
 
The bike seems so sweet and responsive while under power, and then you slow down and enter a town. What a racket, clutch rattle? Cam chains? Mine has been noisy since new and 20,000 later is just the same. Nevery fails to annoy me. Came over the Col de la Bonnette a few weeks ago and my bike sounded terminal. 2 Germans on old Africa Twins turned up on the camp site, 1250000 miles and 23 years old and they sounded like new. Will be at a Honda dealer soon to check out the 2016 Africa twin.
 
Yeah but Hondas are just not cool are they :), my ex bought a Honda Jazz FFS! Very sensible reliable motor I am sure but one may as well just give up and die :)
 
I spent my early biking years slagging off Jap crap, in all that time South Wales was as far as I took my Triumph Tiger 650. It served me well for 10000s of miles on short journey between repairs. Wish I had bought a CB500 and travelled to the Alps in the 80s.

I did too, My first bike was a BSA250 SS, heap of shit it was, I followed that by a Ducati 250 SS, lovely but flawed - I then saw the light and bought Japanese almost exclusively from then on. Japanese bikes just worked and killed the British bike industry (run by chartered engineers ;)) BUT I would struggle to buy a Japanese bike now when there are so many more interesting European ones.

Did it have the anakee 3s on? Notoriously noisy.
 
I wouldn't ride any bike without earplugs.:rob

Apart from my pushbike.:P
 
We did 530 miles for breki yesterday i had no ear plugs and never will how am i supposed to hear the next sports bike riders fury as i nerf him on the brakes through a corner & #uc# of into the distance !!! Noisey engines wind noise exhausts its all part of it all if you dont like it buy a volvo ! Bmw are trying to break the mould with old fart comuter boring dull old man close to death or retirement image with all their bikes i think the 1200 wc gs whales at the top end even on a standard can why would you stuff polystyrene in your lug holes to block it out ! Just because you have a death sorry birth certificate that says your old doesn't mean you have to be ! Live once, live fast, die happy..! Your missus is probably more of a hazard to your health than your gs will ever be... ! :-) do you stick ear plugs in everytime her lips start moving.. ! Maybe you should and give the bike a rest !!

Have you got your radiator guards fitted ! Now you wouldn't want to get a stone thro ya rad and spoil your trip to Italy would you now.
