I need a new rear shock fitted urgently

Hi all,

2005 1200GS - no additional warranty

I recently tried to adjust the rebound on the rear shock (Little screw on the bottom). It appeared to be a little stiff to turn, but I managed and now all it does is rotate with out stopping - I am pretty sure the shock is broken.
I only used a screw driver and my hands - no additional leverage.

I will certainly talk to my dealer when I take it in for a service shortly. However I don't hold much hope that BMW will take responsibility. Just for info - I have been quoted 425 Sterling plus labour on top.

I guess the feeling from the site is that if you are going to pay that much you may as well get some better after market versions.

I need the bike as I have planned a touring holiday in just over 3 weeks. So my question is:

What would you guys recommend as an alternative and where to buy and get fitted.

I can see that Wilbers are well liked but - the fact they are built to order (4 weeks) and I can't find any one to fit them rules them out at the moment.

I also tried WP - but the factory is now shutting down for a couple of weeks and so will be too late.

Any body any other suggestions - I need to get them fitted in the next 3 weeks for my holiday and I am based down south in Reading.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I've gone down the WIlbers route.....all singing and dancing...
now I was quoted 2.5 to 3 weeks delivery and looking at the bike (2007 Adv..) it's near enough a 2 bolt job...(Ok there may be a few things that need to come off forst but it look an easy job....
I'd look into this route mate TBH especially if that the price for a BM shock...

Welcome to the collective James.

On the fitting front the rear is really simple to do so if your pre-pared to do it yourself it may widen your options.

Can point you in the direction of a few how to articles if it would help.

But I have the old shocks in the garage, I'm keeping them to swap back when I sell my bike, the Wilbers will be sold or moved to the next bike.

But if you want to borrow the rear shock for your holidays, you are welcome, they are not too difficult to fit. Just let me have it back in more or less the same condition when you get whatever turns out to be the best option.

I'm about 6 miles from Reading, and can help you with the fitting, time permitting.

What makes you think it's 'broken'? Is your back end bouncing around?
If it's just the slotted adjuster parting company with the rest of the internals it may be that you've simply lost the ability to adjust the shock but otherwise it still works.

Have you tried the parts suppliers who advertise on here? some do 2nd hand ones which may be better than what you've got, though from memory these were crap from new .
PS motor works supplied my ohlins when I had one.
PPS they werent hard to fit if you have some mechanical ability. ie can undo bolts with out rounding them and can fit them without stripping them, but thats for your own personal risk assessment to work out.

Motobins and Motorworks are always very helpful. I don't use them much nowadays having had a few new bikes in a row, but they were alwys very knowledgeable - new or secondhand bits;;

not so many weeks ago there was a rear shock for sale, in the for sale section

My adjuster screw does the same, push it in hard with the screwdriver and turn it, that will stil adjust the rebound, the only thing is you have to advust by feel not position.

Hi Guys,

Thought I would let you know how I got on.

Thank you for all your replies - In particular Shugie - very kind of you to offer.

I took my bike in for a service (24k) and complained - that I thought it should be more robust - they called BMW and they offered to pay 50% parts and labour. Given that the bike is 4 years old I am reasonably happy with the deal.

In addition they advised me that I had a leaking Gearbox seal - I had noticed that the clutch was slipping on occasions. BMW agreed to pay 100% parts & 50% labour and I pay (125.00 Inc VAT)

I must confess I was a little down hearted - thinking that my bike was going to end up being a money pit.

Of course I wish I did not have to spend anything - however I am a great deal happier than I was - so a result really.
