I really want a 1200GS but...

I got an 05 1200 not a bit of corrosion on the front engine cover

eddie

Me too and me neither.....it neither.....the bike neither......neither no corrosion. The bike has no corrosion on the front engine cover. And it's reliable if you allow for the known bits......FPC, RA and possible better battery, for older models anyway. Whatever the 1150/1100 boys tell you, the 1200 is a great bike.

yeah dont listen to what we have to say, its your choice and your bike, so make the right decision for you, and you only.

all bikes could have problems one way or another, its just how you deal with the problem afterwards.

by chance?

".....But as is the case with all these little problems. some bikes have them - some dont. as has been said...."
I have never had corrosion anywhere on 3 GS's over about 7 years. BUT
1. I live a LONG way from the sea.
2.They have always been garaged in relatively warm and dry conditions.
3. They have been ridden virtually every day..
4. I fittd & "fender extender" to my 2004 model that I had for 4 years.
5.It does not rain too often where I live.
6 They have all had a GOOD clean about twice a year.
7. TYhey were all bought new.

I've gone and done it.

2006 1200GS 4125 miles on the clock - absolutly clean. I will be fitting a 'fender extender' as soon as I get a chance. I pick it up next Saturday.

Oh I'm so happy. The 20 mile journey home from the dealer mught just take 100 miles or so. Can't wait...............

Make sure you check to see if the foam insert behind the black plastic cover has been removed. It retains water and encourages corrosion. Its only apparent use is to dampen noise, although taking it out makes no difference. The 08 onwards models don't have this fitted anyway. I took mine out when the bike was 6 months old. 18 months on there is just a bit of corrosion and nowhere near bad enough to be visible past the cover. I've now soaked the area in ACF50.

You can see the water stains where the water enters the top of the cover and runs down. Obviously on wet salted roads this is very corrosive where the alloy is unpainted, the rectangular squares either side of the small square black cover Again, from 08 onwards the front engine cover is completely painted.

Well done!

To find a 2 - 3 year old bike with just 4000 miles on the clock is a real achievement. To cheer you up even more I can tell you that here in France such a bike (with ABS etc.) would cost you around 11,000 euros from a dealer. That is £10,000 pounds and I bet that you didn't pay anything like that.
