I seem to have the wrong headlight fitted...

Hi all,

Quick question for you to ponder. My bike was imported from Germany in 2002 by Woolaston BMW and it had the clock conversion etc done by them.

I had the bike MOT'd today and the tester said I have a Euro dipped beam unit "E1" marked on the lense. The beam of light is thrown off to the right and not the left as it should do.

Should this have been changed by Woolaston's and if so do you think they might honour the work 4 yrs later.

He passed the MOT but put some sticky tape on the lense as a temp fix to get it through. It passed last year but MOT's have got a lot tougher now and it was picked up.

It's not the end of the world I know but thought I would get your collective opinions.

If it is same as my 1150,you can rotate the lense to the other side, p.37 in book iirc...
Remove screen, remove placcy shield, loosen pinch screw, twist beam about 60 degrees anticlockwise facing the headlight from front, tighten pinch screw etc.
beam can be bloody hard to twist, squirt wd40, have cup of tea, then try again.

Thats what I thought but the tester said I would need to move it 180 degrees and that bit miffed me.

I'm not sure if the pattern of the beam unit is symmetrical.......so although you could turn it through 180 degrees, it may still not be correct...

It's up to you....if you've not noticed anything wrong in four years, it doesn't need changing unless you get crap from MOT testers each year (or an eagle eyed punter notices it if/when you sell).......but I'd say that the dealer should change it...yes it's four years on but that's fair enough, it wouldn't have come to light until the MOT was due

In fact, thinking about it, I'm pretty sure the beam isn't symettrical...if it was, the shape of the bit you put the sticker on for foreign touring would be a wedge with the top and bottom sides that go towards the centre of the unit at the same angle...I think the lower one slopes down more sharply to illuminate te kerb, and the top one is flatter ...so it woouldn't be right if that shape was flipped upside down bu turning it 180

Yup - can deffo be changed as per handbook - I used to set mine up for continental riding when I went abroad.

Exactly.... thats why oncoming drivers have never had a problem with it

Take the Tape OFF , the light will crack with the heat, didn't think the light would be hot enough, but ask Daz, when he taped his light last year for Europe.

My light is the EU one, so on the MOT I turned it just half way, you will have to pull the light out and cut the small lug off, so you turn it half way and not the full conversion.
This gives a V light pattern and no problem with the MOT, and then fit HID and sorted, good pattern with light.

The imported GS's have headlights that look like the European "E" beam on the above linked website with the kicke-up part of the light on the right. The UK lights are excatly the same with the kick-up part to the left as shown.

All you do by rotating the dipped lamp is change the kick-up from right to left or vica-versa. Rocket science it is not.

not had any bother with mine... an SPC german import set to 'abroad' for 3.5 yrs, and a couple of MOTs.

All it does is rotate _/ round by about 30degress to become \_

180degrees would be all -\ and
