I think Garmin is trying to tell me to buy a new computer

City Navigator Europe v8 & latest Mapsource.

I'm trying to put a useful number of maps on a 1GB flash card for my 2610 (Germany, Benelux, Switzerland, large parts of France, all of the UK and bits of Austria and Italy - all in all about 950MB worth) and before it actually writes the maps to the card it builds an 'index'.

Which seems to take at least one hour  . Granted, the machine is not *that* fast (Athlon XP2800 w/ 1GB of RAM) but this seems to be extracting the urine, especially because it appears to build said index every time you write something to a memory card.

Anybody else seeing this?

How often are you doing this?

Once the maps are there - if you add e.g. another Waypoint - you don't need to bother transferring the maps again.

Fortunately I'm doing the transfer via a USB card reader which is substantially faster than the USB connection to the 2610 so that only takes a few minutes...

I was wondering if I should get a 2GB card or not but in the end decided that a 1GB should do the job - I've got a couple more cards that came with my Garmin which are loaded with the most useful maps - basically UK & France...

Still, good to know that it seems to be a feature of the newer maps and software.

Not that often. It's just something I noticed when I was uploading the new maps and it suddenly did take a lot longer.

I bought a 2GB card with the intention of loading the whole of CN Version 7 onto it - once and for all. I lost patience while the computer started saying that it would take 6 hours and climbing. :eek

So last Sunday I started early and decided to load a pile, but not all and if it took all day, then tough. The computer showed 3 Hours remaining, but then suddenly said it had finished. :nenau I've checked the unit (just in case) and all the maps are there, so if its any help to you, the estimated download time isn't accurate.

V6 does the "indexing" - but I'd imagine there is more detail on the V8 maps so will take "longer" (although my V6 takes much longer as laptop spec a bit old :( )
