Am interested in swopping my GS for an RT and have found what on the surface is a good deal on a 2011 bike. But this bike had dreadful steering which I traced to a good 1cm play at 3 and 9 o'clock in the rear wheel. OK so far, dealer says he will sort it.

Went back today to look at the bike and all the play has gone. But

1/ the dealer says that whilst he was away immediately after my test, the tech swapped the bevel box for a new one that they, a Yamaha ' Jap bike dealer, happened to have in stock. Well I suppose its just possible :nenau
2/ but now they have an abs alarm which wont turn off. So the suspicion must be that the bevel box they just had in stock is and earlier one maybe from a gs or an rt. And in 2008 the box was uprated because of all the bearing failures. Which didnt make them failure proof as I found on my GS ( thanks Mikey Boy).
3/ The report back from the techie was that the problem wasnt a bearing failure but a failure of the splines on the hub carrier. Cant see how this can cause sideways play - can you?

I wouldnt even be raising these questions if the deal werent a really good one.

So comments please . In partcular about the compatibility of the different bevel voxes.

Yup - Run fast, run far............................ :rob

You'll probably outrun that bike.

seems they have fitted a replacement final drive but the ABS/sensor doesn't now match the final drive. Salesman probably has no idea what's really been done, just repeating what he thinks was said by the macanico

What shop is it?

Oh, don't buy that one...

The answer is in the thread title. What more do you need? :nenau

Walk away. Quickly. Good used RTs are not exactly rare. You might even find one for sale by a dealer who actually has a clue.

It is a gooooood deal. Like real gooood. Even if I had to throw away the bevel box and buy a brand new one I wouldnt be out of pocket. So has anyone got some technical info?

Just supposing this was ( say ) a 2006 GS bevel box, what issues would that cause?

good deal or not mate, theres plenty out there to choose from, that havnt been molested or abused for that matter, so why start with one that is already being bodged up to sell:blast, what else are they or the bike hiding:augie, as as been said, move on, do yourself a favour:thumby:

Don't ask me how I know but the pre 08/06 final drive is not compatible with the post 08/06 one. The abs ring on the crownwheels are very different. Faults will include an ABS fault and a speedo error of about 40%.

@Nick V has fitted just about every alternative bevel box to his bikes. Check out his Supermoto thread. http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=343740

Test ride the bike if its really got the wrong bevel box the speedo error will be obvious. But regardless the bike cant pass an MOT with faulty ABS so the dealer has to get it sorted or the bike is not fit to sell.

Ah! Some useful info at last. What you are doing is confirming what I suspected that the bevel box they have "found" is an early one. Thats not acceptable. What I cannot understand, and to be fair the salesman is a bit pi55ed off about, is that the tech stuck in the new old box rather than take the issue up with BMW who should really be replacing the original bevel box that failed at 2600 miles and 2 years

There is a theme emerging here regarding what to do. From the sounds of it, the salesman doesn't trust the mechanic and I imagine the feeling is mutual so there is going to be a big issue here at some point and you will be left with something that's gone wrong. The new or replacement FD has to match the original one (they are all numbered) and it's as easy as a phone call to BMW to confirm the correct FD.

I'd seriously just walk away and fnd something else.
