...but, is it normal to get a noise when I roll the back wheel to and fro?
It only seems to happen when it starts to move or changes direction, and seems to come from the final drive but I suppose it could be the brake drum.

It sounds a bit like the edge of a playing card being dragged over a rough surface, but could just possibly be a hydraulic shlurping sort of noise.

Tell me straight doc, I can take it, sob, sob.....

Hmmm...not necessarily.

Thought the same after returning from a decent ride out in August on the GSPD...66,000 miles and still on original shaft (I know it's only a matter of time!!)...horrible noise coming from the rear end. Put it on stand and spun back wheel...lots of clunking and scraping, so thought it had finally expired.

But no...removed rear wheel and 1/2 inch of brake lining had broken off and was being carried round!!!

Lucky or what...live to run another day.

Short and to the point! Thank you Rob. (Muffled sobs.)
I'll get the wheel off as soon as I can escape back out to the garage. Maybe I've left a pair of mole grips in there or something.
If it is knackered then at least that solves the problem of the stripped thread on the shaft filler plughole. Solves that old cash surplus problem too!

Hmm, I don't get it. No dead animals in there.
If I take the wheel off and turn the splines of the bevel box there's no noise. If I turn the wheel on its spindle without it being engaged on the splines there's no noise. But put the 2 together and it makes a scraping noise.

I've tried backing off the brakes. I've cleaned the drum and the brake shoes, and I've scraped out all the old grease from the splines. All I seem to have achieved is getting a clonk as well as a scrape. That's probably due to lack of grease....
Pooh.
