i-tunes question

PC imploded some months ago. Needed hard drive backed up blast - since bought external hd), then emptied and XP re-installed by friendly neighbourhood PC shop. All sorted , but had to reload various program software myself, including i-tunes.

Did that, but all the choons in me library are now there twice. Fairly certain it is (my) user incompetence, rather than the fault of the program.

Can anyone confirm and, more importantly, suggest how I can get rid of the duplicates, without (a) getting rid of everything in the process and (b) having to remove the duplicates individually ?

Its in the Itunes menu, File/show duplicates, but make sure that they are exactly that as it can get confused between a live version of a song and a studio version, for example...

back again :

checked that out and it's not that - whether I opt to show duplicates or not, there are 2 of everything. No trouble when on shuffle, but if I want to listen to an album, I will hear every track twice or have to manually skip when each track ends. I know I could make a playlist to get round it, but seems a faff.

It must be something bloody stupid I've done, but I've no idea what, how or when. Bloody technology (more like bloody stupidy thicky head of mine).

Ah well, I only use it now and then .........

Edit, Preferences, Advanced, is 'Keep itunes music folder organised' and 'Copy files to itunes music folder when adding to library' ticked?

You could also right click a song that is duplicated and select 'Get Info'. At the bottom of the new window it will show 'Where:'. Do this for the duplicate file and see if the location is the same.
