Metals only for powder coat - its cooked at something like 180 to 200 degrees C
Plastics like ABS are quite easy to paint just needing a suitable plastic primer. Polypropylene (PP) is tough but nothing sticks. It can be painted but needs someone who knows what he's doing. The snag is that if the paint gets damaged or the plastic gouged, an invisible repair is close to impossible.
I use CJ Ward of Burton on Trent for powder coating and stove enamel. Powder is tough and low cost but (to my eyes) the metallics lock plasticky. The stove looks great in metallic but isnt quite so durable. That said, Wards did my Yamaha engine panels and they have kept their finish for at least 2 winters and at least 30K miles.
Wards will also powder coat a bike wheel for £30 a wheel plus another £30 and possible delay if you want them blinged with polished rims. I use mine all year so kept them black.
