I’m sure that my bike has developed a whine; it always did a little in 6th, but now seems a little louder. And, also can hear it in 5th. I hadn’t been bothered by this as on here it has been mentioned and all came to the conclusion "They all do that sir"

However, I’ve just read this thread and now it has got me worried

Should this be investigated? What is it pointing to ? Or just carry on riding it and forget it ?

I did replace the F/D & Gear box oil recently (Halfords Gear oil GL5) but surely this cant have anything to do with it ??

Any information would be greatly obliged.

I live in the Highlands, I phoned Steptoe out of the blue a few months back about a klanky noise, he was more than helpfull and set me on the right path to fixing the problem.
He's probably not up yet is all.

Its the splines on the left hand layshaft which have worn into an oval shape causing the dogs on third gear to rub against the selector forks upper leg.
Normally starts in 6th and just before the end of the mainshaft pokes its head out of the back of the box, it starts whining in 5th.
Its caused by GL5 oil being incapable of splashing up far enough to reach the affected parts. Something to do with the chain-molecules being too short and restricting the splash to about 5cm's. Your layshaft splines are 6cm's away from the nearest splash point, so run dry most of the time.

New box I'm afraid.

Mine did exactly the same thing, what brought it to my attention was the whining, it got so bad it was actually whining in the garage at night, I would have carried on regardless until a neighbour told me about the noise, a few ccs of synthetic olive oil cured the problem completely

This is a well-known problem.

The usual fix is to adjust the overhead underhand reversing ratchet until the 4th motion shaft just touches the dog-gear bollick.

A 50:50 mix of GL5 and GL0 (or GL2.5 - if you can find it) ensures that the average molecule length is such that the layshaft splines no longer run dry. But using this mix you must regularly clean the jox trap which supports the gear dogs dangler.

I get it locally from a mate who works in the Welsh olive groves, he is the bloke who sources my canbus fluid too, top feller to know
