I went to France and it was shut!

Mrs BR and I had a long weekend free and decided to take the 1600 to France - down to Brantome via D940 through Gueret across to Cognac and back up - just to shake the legs and get a bit of euro time in.

Observations:

The 1600GT lives up to its name - super bike for long distance touring and pretty economical - over 300 miles on a tank if touring D roads at Mrs BR preferred speed!

France is shut!! Seriously where is everyone? The towns are boarded up with restaurants and shops shut. "Dis town is getting' like a Ghost town".

Over the years I have ridden in France the wretched ribbon development of M Briccolard and Buffalo grills etc have reached put ever further in to the farmland and hideous billboards even further. So now the cute villages seem almost linked by tat.


The drivers, especially lorry, were very bike aware and courteous.
It wasn't cheep!

Yes a sad decline, follows what's happening over here most small villages shut for the foreseeable. Supermarkets have made sure of that:rob

Thanks for the images tis a lovely part of France.
Julie and I are off down to stay near Brantome and Perigueux early August, little rental for a week, family trip so no bike:tears
 
Have a tour round the more rural parts of this green and pleasant land, especially midweek. You'll find it's pretty much shut too. It's just that our architecture doesn't seem to be quite as inward facing and we don't go in for shutters :nenau

We found the same thing,Most small villages shut,You dont see a soul about,
How they make a living out in the small villages is beyond me :nenau ,Not a lot of chance getting something to eat or drink out in the sticks if you are passing through

We found this, everything was closed even during the week and no one was about. It was like a western

They're all down here, clogging up oor feckin villages and lolling about in the squares drinking and eating constantly. :D
Made even busier today with the Tour de France going by :Motomartin
I do see lots of quiet villages in France though, noticed this in Normandy the other week. Even down here a lot of the villages are quietish but there's still life around. We have supermarkets here, but every village still has it's own baker, butcher and wee grocer, so it's not all bad.
 
Lot's of the cafes look shut, but in reality the owners are just hiding with the lights off in fear of someone wanting a coffee which could take them over the 12 o clock closing time.


Well thats what its like here anyway:confused:
 
Apparently they're all living in Clapham (south London).

It's full of French bakeries and cafes/restaurants, with small French nurseries and even primary schools according to my cousin.

Went down there to visit a few months ago and a few French families in the pub, with adults and children speaking a mixture of French and English!!

Must say it was rather nice - children impeccably behaved naturally :rob

watched the incredible video of the castle just as my wife walked in...

oh yes we must go there she uttered!..
