Island Mai 2006
Hi Merlings,
Last year for two berth cabin return was £1100 sailing early June.
This year for two berth cabin return is £850 sailing late May.
Couchette is a lot cheaper, but it takes three days to get there between Aberdeen, Shetland, Faroes then arriving Seydisfjordur, east Iceland.
We found food on the Smyril line was expensive in the cafe. Northlink were great Aberdeen to Shetland.
Accom is mainly camping, max £20 per night or free.
Hytta huts £50-60 eg. Hofn, SE Iceland.
Food at local diners is about £4-9 each per meal. Even KFC!! Oh and free coffee mostly!
Fuel was about £1.10 per litre or similar.
In all it wasn't as expensive as we thought if you eat where the locals do and keep away from the tourist cafes. We met and are friends with several Icelandic Bikers and they really are a friendly bunch, so going back with contacts to meet is even better for us this time!
Most people speak good English but Icelandic is fun to learn, my Icelandic e.mails have my friends there in stitches as they try to work out what I mean but I think they appreciate the effort, it's just a shame we can spend so little time there! Six days round trip is a high price to pay when you can fly from Glasgow in an hour and a half and hire a jeep but there's nothing like taking the bike!
Hope this is of some help
Chris
